The 3/24/2009 update for Windows Genuine Advantage Notification does not
install, either by automatic updates or by using the Custom update option. It
gives no error message -- Just

"The following updates were not installed:
Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474)

Its failure to install also gets in the way of other automatic updates.
However, I have been able to install other updates by hand using the Custom
updates option.

I am running Windows XP, Service Pack 3 and Internet Explorer 8. I first
noticed this after upgrading from IE 7 to IE8 a few weeks ago.

Any suggestions for either installing it or getting it out of my
installation queue?

Thanks,

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Go to Windows Update website | Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to
complete | Uncheck/deselect KB905474 and hide it ("Don't show me this update
again").

4. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)
