If DLSayremn went to Windows Update on May 8, did s/he install ALL of the
Critical Updates? And did s/he go back immediately to check for Updates made
necessary by the Updates just installed... In short, if the machine was
fully up to date on May 8, there have certainly been no further Updates
since then. And there will never be another, so there is nothing to worry
about.
Sorry, I don't know if this is a strange WU bug that has a known answer
(that I don't know), or if it's a case of that machine having been part of a
domain with restrictions in place... Again, not something I'm real familiar
with, but if the machine is/was part of a domain, and is now being used as a
stand-alone, then DLSayremn should visit
microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion or win98.networking to get full
guidance. IIRC, it's a bit complicated to clean up. (I think a reformat
reinstall might even be faster.)
Has DLSayremn also installed up-to-date antivirus or anything else, without
encountering problems? Can s/he use this link:
