year 2000 Gateway Essential, Intel 667 PIII (Bryant)MB, Windows 98SE SP1
Putting it into use because my 15 month old Presario SR2180NX, Vista SP1, is
waiting for repairs again. On/Off switch this time.

C:/Program Files/Windows Update shows v4 folder created 05/08/08
iuhist.xml created 05/08/08, modified 05/11/08
iuident.cab created 05/08/08
iuident.txt created 06/04/05
Temp folder created 05/08/08 contains:
iuident.cab created 06/04/05 modified 05/08/08

Last used Windows Update 05/08/08. Did Windows Update update. Downloaded and
installed a critical update.

Today, 05/12/08, went to check for updates and recieved this message;

Do you want to run and install Windows Update signed on 8/25/03.
Figured this must be newer version so clicked yes.

Got this message;

You must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of Adminstrator
Group to run this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network,
network policy may also prevent you from completing this procedure.

Tried several times. Even went in through main MS site. Same thing happens.

Any ideas? Should I hit Update support with this?

Thanks for any help. DLSayre

Got a reply from Update Support. Very nicely told:

We can't help you because you are running Windows 98SE. Will assist you in
upgrading to XP SP2/Business or buying a new computer.

Can you use the Microsoft Update Catalog site instead?

http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Home.aspx

Hmm... searching for 98 gives 23 hits, none obviously for your OS.
It looks like the catalog has been cleared of updates for that OS.

Perhaps there is a third-party site somewhere you can use?
E.g. Win95 used to be maintained that way when its SLC
had ended as far as Microsoft was concerned.

Cross-posting to Win98 WU.

Good luck

Support for Win9x ended July 2006.

And the update was...?

And that update was...?

No updates for Win9x machines have been released since Jun-06.

If DLSayremn went to Windows Update on May 8, did s/he install ALL of the
Critical Updates? And did s/he go back immediately to check for Updates made
necessary by the Updates just installed... In short, if the machine was
fully up to date on May 8, there have certainly been no further Updates
since then. And there will never be another, so there is nothing to worry
about.

Sorry, I don't know if this is a strange WU bug that has a known answer
(that I don't know), or if it's a case of that machine having been part of a
domain with restrictions in place... Again, not something I'm real familiar
with, but if the machine is/was part of a domain, and is now being used as a
stand-alone, then DLSayremn should visit
microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion or win98.networking to get full
guidance. IIRC, it's a bit complicated to clean up. (I think a reformat
reinstall might even be faster.)

Has DLSayremn also installed up-to-date antivirus or anything else, without
encountering problems? Can s/he use this link:

Robert, thanks.
I didn't even think of crossposting this issue. I had downloaded
AutoUpdate98 by "soporific" and got an error message about "Loading
TcpMib.dll" after I installed. I have been working on that with help from
Gary, MEB and Franc.

Would have gotten back to you sooner, but

Hi Gary, PABear:

Gary is familiar with this. He helped me with another problem concerning a
TcpMib.dll error.

This is order of events.

Had done clean install. Loaded Kerio FireWall and Avast AV. Installed
Actiontec GT701-WG. Installed HP PSC1410v. Installed Samsung CDDVDW. Updated
IE to 6.0. Went to Update and downloaded/installed updates for IE6.0.

IE 6.0.2800.1106IS
Update Versions; SP1; Q918439; Q916281; Q833989; Q891781; Q313829; Q816362;
Q824220; Q830849; Q885258; Q893627; Q896156;905495; Q938127; Q939653

Late went to bed.

Got up, did a few chores and then turned on compter. Installed FlashPlayer8.
Installed Media Player9. Went to Update to check for updates and got
following:

Update for Windows Update v4. Clicked ok. Got message that I had to be
logged on as an Administrator to use Windows. Not full message, about 1-1/2
pages. Tried several more times to get into Update and same thing kept
happening.

As of 2 hous ago, I am still getting the Administrator message, but the
Update v4 has stopped trying to download.

Downloaded and installed a 3rd party autopatch which had the WU updates and
other fixes. Caused a minor problem that Gary, MEB and Franc helped me fix.

Probably should have sent Gary $3.

There still one glitch. I can print everything but Bingo Cards from GSN
using this computer. Everytime I go to print them IE dies. I can print other
things from that site with no problems. What is really funny is that my
wife's old GW with ME that is networked to this one can print them using this
printer. As long as she can get her bingo cards she's happy.

I will drop this issue until something causes me to do a reinstall. It does
what I need it to do. Wife wants the bare spots on the house repainted.

Again, thanks for the help. DLSayre
