Update for Windows Update

I realize this sounds ridiculous, but here it is.

When I try to run Windows updates, I get a window with a yellow warning and
the statement that "To check for updates,you must first install an update
for Windows Update. Your automatic update settings will not change".

When I select Install now, the process repeats itself. Whatever it is
that's trying to be installed never seems to get to me.

Any suggestions?

Yes: Determine the security application or the hijackware infection that's
blocking the ActiveX Control from being installed.

Need more help? Start my stating your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP
SP3; Vista SP1) and telling us if this is a sudden, new problem or an
ongoing one.
