Update for Windows Vista (KB980248) -- No more fonts available!

I was installed Update for Windows Vista (KB980248). After the install, the
machine rebooted. The install failed and I recieved error 800700C1. It was
midnight so I threw up my hands and went to bed.

At 3am, Windows Update ran automatically, and this time it said it succeeded
but it definately did not reboot.

The update was done using a "Standard" user with no administration rights.

When I startup IE 8, no fonts appear. When I startup Word, it says is
cannot find any fonts and throws an out of memory error loading fonts. Other
portions of windows are also turning up blank because of the lack of fonts!!!!

Obviously, there is a permission problem!!!!

When I login as a local admin, everything seems to work (this is how I am
able to write this post). Problem is, I have several "standard" users setup
for various family members that I do not trust to run as Admin.

I tried searching, but either its too early or this problem is unique to me
but I cannot find any information regarding this problem anywhere.

How can I undo what this update was suppose to have done? I just want to
run my standard users and I don't care about Office 2010! I don't know there
is a restore point because this was suppost to be a permission change.

Anyway, really frustrated right now and hope someone can help!

Was KB980248 offered & eventually installed via Windows Update or did you
(attempt to) install it manually?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

I have Vista Ultimate SP2 + all security updates. I have Office 2007
installed and I was installing the update in preperation for Office 2010.

It was offered as a Windows Update. I installed it via the WUS window by
clicking Install Update. Then, at 3am when I have updates scheduled, it
kicked off and attempted to install it a second time because when I did the
install it failed. It was successfull at the 3am automatic

being a different Microsoft Issue. AVS has been uninstalled for about a
month.

Did you mean a free-trial version of AVG AntiVirus or AVG Internet Security?

What anti-virus application was installed before you installed that free
trial?

When (approx. date) did you install the free trial?

Had the free-trial period already expired by the time you uninstalled it?

When (approx. date) did you install Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE)?

What anti-virus application was installed before you installed MSE (e.g.,
the AVG free trial)?

No, nothing came installed

Perhaps this is just me, but my computer worked fine before the update and I
had just finished a paper for work. Then I installed the update and now I
have no fonts as a "standard" user. HOWEVER, if I run as local Administartor
everything works fine. What does the AntiVirus have to do with my Fonts and
the Font permission upgrade?

When (approx. date) did you purchase the computer?

The AVG free-trial had already expired when you reinstalled MSE, yes?

May I ask why you'd uninstalled MSE and then installed the AVG free-trial?
(I presume you didn't have both of them installed at the same time, right?)

I suspect the User Accounts without Admin privileges may have been
damaged/corrupted by AVG...or even possibly gotten infected while the AVG
free-trial was installed or after the free-trial period had expired but
before you got MSE (re)installed.

5/22/2008, its a Dell T3400 running Vista Ultimate 32bit and I have applied
every update that has been sent down by Windows Update.

then I uninstalled AVG and reinstalled MSE

Everything checked out I have never had a virus or malware it was a
precaution because MS did not trust MSE and the support person asked me to do
it only for it to be WUS cache problem, so I did. It is impossible to have
them both running at the same time.

but not working after the update what does AVG or MSE have to do with
anything related to the fonts. If its a simple file permission problem,
then what is the script I can run to reset all the fonts? Maybe I am thick,
but if there was a script to set the permissions, then there could be a
script to undo the permissions or am i missing something?

Or, here is a better one that could help. Give me the permissions to apply
to a few fonts to make IE work and I can apply those permissions and see if
IE works and then we have a solution. Right now, I have no idea how to
proceed.

Yes, I just wanted to make certain I had it right: You should have
uninstalled the free trial & (re)installed MSE *before* the free trial
period expired. Running even a few hours without up-to-date definitions is
more than enough time for a computer to get infected (not that any version
of AVG, up-to-date or not, would effectively protect a computer IMHO).

OK: MSE Beta first became available in late June 2009. What anti-virus
application was installed before you installed MSE beta?

That's rich, especially if MS recommended any version of AVG over MSE.
(Then again, the support tech may have been thinking along the same lines as
I am right now.)

If you're seeing error messages referring to a "Permissions" problem, that's
another good sign of infection.

Again, I'm not saying the computer *is* infected, only that it's a very good
possibility.
