how to update windows without using IE

I have one, maybe silly question:
I have the Automatic Updates feature turned off, doing the updates manually.
Now, for browsing the internet I am not using Internet Explorer and honestly
speaking, I would even uninstall it from my machine if I could.
Now, if I want to update my Windows, I go to the Start menu and click the
Windows Update link, but it opens this service in Explorer... which I am not
happy about.

Is there any way how to update my computer without using IE, or not?

P.S. if you want to reply with a comment like "it is not recommended to have
the Auto Update feature off", please don't bother... thanks...

Well, at least for the critical security updates, you will find direct
download links in the security bulletins for each update (that you can
use a non-IE browser to browse and download from):

You can also sign up for an e-mail notification when new security
bulletins are released.
