Last Wed (2/23) morning my wife's computer automatically updated KB887742 and
that evening my computer did the same. Right after that, certain things on
both computers stopped working. We both run XP, and have Earthlink as our
server. We both use their "Total Access" for protection, but also run Norton
Internet Security 2005. Suddenly I cannot get into "Total Access" or my
email. I run Outlook Express and she runs Outlook.

When I try to log into Total Access I get the following:
AppName: taskpanl.exe
AppVer: 2005.1.57.0
ModName: mfc70.dll
ModVer: 7.0.9466.0
Offset:000b324f

I have uninstalled and reinstalled my Earthlink spftware 3 times at their
insistance. Now they say it is an Internet Expolrer problem. I do not know
if the XP automatic update began this, but it the only thing I can recall
being new. My Windows Firewall is turned off, my mail is properly
configured, and I regularly run spyware and antivirus scans, with no problems
showing up

Is anyone else having this same problem since the new update???

Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated!

FYI I installed that update and had different problems, BSOD, critical
errors to name a few. I uninstalled the update and all is well again.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how did you uninstall it?? I can find
much information on uninstalling updates in other OS, like Win2000 but not
for XP. Thanks

Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs check the "Show Updates" scroll
down till you find the bad boy and uninstall it.

I had a similar problem and MS sent me this fix.

As I understand it, your Windows XP is constantly trying to run windows
update even though the update has sucessfully run. If I have
misunderstood your issue, don't hesitate to let me know.

Please try the following:

Click on Start and then Run.
Type cmd and press ok.
This will open a black window.
Type cd C:\windows\system32\catroot2
Press enter
Type attrib -h -s -r C:\windows\system32\catroot2
Press the enter key
Type attrib -h -s -r C:\windows\system32\catroot2\*.*
Press enter

The next time you install an update this problem should go away.

I would be interested in some feedback as well, I did windows update today. I
use Outlook express. At bottom of screen it states receiving 34 messages but
none of my messages appeared in my inbox. Any idea where they would be
stored. I turned off firewall but still a problem. I tested sending
additional emails and they are not going in my inbox even though message
states "receiving emails"
