Update for Windows XP (KB898461) failed

Error 0x8020000E is: BG_E_VOLUME_CHANGED

"The destination volume has changed. If the disk is removable, it might have been replaced
with a different disk. Reinsert the original disk and resume the job."

By renaming/deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder you will lose your WU History listing
(not important). If everything is working okay again you can delete the renamed
SoftwareDistribution folder.

Renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder

Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder:
a. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder.

Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

Thank you. Your solution worked for me (I had cloned my failing hard drive
using Acronis True Image Home v9).

HOWEVER, when I came back to Windows Update, the 4 updates that had failed
were no longer showing on the list (Project 2003 SP3, Office 2003 SP3, Visio
2003 SP3, Excel Viewer 2003, SP3). I randomly clicked a "Get It" button or
something for Windows Update (which I think I already had). That process
came back very quickly (as expected) and THEN when I did a Tools=>Windows
Update, those 4 updates showed up and they seem to be installing
successfully. This might just be a fluke related to my partially corrupted
hard drive.

It was Taurarian who posted the fix ... Lynn had posted the question.

NO, bad sectors on the HD can/will cause updates to become corrupted or
damaged ... just as the HD was damaged. True Image cloned bad sectors
along with the other data.
When you redownloaded the updates they were in a consistent state.
That's why they installed.
