I reinstalled windows 2000pro on my boyfriends computer a few days ago, and
I'm trying to update windows. When I click on the express install button I
get an error 0xC80003FB and "The website has encountered a problem and cannot
display the page you are trying to view. " I have scanned for viruses,
spyware, scandisk, all that jazz and there is nothing wrong in that area. I
also tried a fix that I found by doing a search for the error number, and it
didn't work for me. The fix was this: I stopped Automatic Updates Service,
then deleted what was in %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\datastore folder, then
started the updates service back up, then tried to update windows again. I am
not having any other problems with the computer on any front. Any ideas?
Thanks.
Linda

0xC80003FB - This error means
ERROR_NO_LOG_SPACE
System could not allocate the required space in a registry log.

Try and free up some space on the drive where the Operating System is
installed and then try Windows Update again.

If space isn’t the problem, then check the Event Viewer, do you have
something like:-

Event Type: Error
Event Source: ESENT
Event Category: Database Page Cache
Event ID: 476
Date:
Time:
User:
Computer:
Description:
wuauclt (2508) The database page read from the file
"C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\DataSto re.edb" at offset 286720
(0x0000000000046000) for 4096 (0x00001000) bytes failed verification because
it contains no page data. The read operation will fail with error -1019
(0xfffffc05). If this condition persists then please restore the database
from a previous backup.

If so, then -

Click Start, select Run, type in: services.msc
then press enter
Now look for the Automatic Updates Service, right click it and choose to stop

Click Start, select Run, type in: %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
then press enter
Open the Datastore folder and delete its contents.

Click Start, select Run, type in: type services.msc
then press enter
Now look again for the Automatic Update Service and choose to start

Try running the Updates again.

If in doubt, cut and paste the contents of the datastore folder to another
location
so that you can copy contents back if required.

No guarantees.

TaurArian,
Thanks for the reply. Your post back in may is the one that I found
previously when looking for help. I have plenty of room on my hard drive, and
as I said in my first post, I already tried your fix and it didn't work. Any
other ideas?

This time we'll try renaming the softwaredistribution folder instead of just
clearing the contents of the datastore folder.

Renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder

Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder: a. Click Start, click Run, type
%systemroot%, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this
folder.

Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

Thank you so much for your help with this. Unfortunately, I did rename the
folder and that didn't help either. This is so weird. Then again, my
boyfriend's computer has always had problems I couldn't solve. Obviously,
updating windows is something that HAS to be done though, it can't just be
ignored. BTW, I am somewhat experienced with computers, you don't need to
spell it out for me if you don't want. I was thinking that perhaps I don't
have active X updated and therefore it's not able to update properly? Just a
guess.

Any clues in the event viewer?

Any further clues in the windows update log?

Kaylene-
Again, thanks for taking the time to help me with this. You know, it's
funny, I never actually checked the event viewer because the error number was
the same, so I just assumed it was in there.... I tried updating again, and
nothing is in the event viewer under any of the categories. Weird. Err...the
windows update log? Is that the reportingevents.log in the software
distribution folder? If so, then when I try to update it's giving:

{D5A63C6D-A201-4527-B02C-DC38942164A8} 2006-07-21
22:49:12-0400 1 148 101 {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} 0 c80003fb WindowsUpdate Failure Software
Synchronization Error: Agent failed detecting with reason: 0xc80003fb

Another weird thing though, it's got this from two hours ago, and it makes
it sound as if an update succeeded, but it never did...

{6157B1B8-8460-4871-8813-771C5A5EFD4C} 2006-07-21
18:40:49-0400 1 202 102 {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} 0 0 AutomaticUpdates Success Content Install Reboot completed.

So, failed software syncronization, that's not a surprise.

Agh, sorry, having brain farts today. Of course I know where the windows
update log is. <sigh> The reason I saw that 'success' in the log was because
that's when I said 'yes, go ahead and use automatic updates'. It's a bit
much for me to look at in the windows update file... Most recent errors that
look useful in the windows log say:

warning: DS : database will be reset next time it starts up due to
0xc80003fb.
WARNING: WU client failed Searching for update with error 0xc80003fb
- Updates found = 0
WARNING: Operation failed due to earlier error, hr=C80003FB
FATAL: Unable to complete asynchronous search. (hr=C80003FB)

Hm. looking on date I first installed windows I see
WARNING: Failed to evaluate Installed rule, updateId =
{ED300F67-421C-4C08-B3BA-F35C55F3B427}.100, error = 0x80041017
FATAL: MSI DLL version is 2.0. Version 3.1 is required.
and that's when it starts giving the 0xc80003fb error for the first time. So
I have to update my msi dll version to 3.1? Hmm. I guess I'll look at that...
