Update won't install: error 0x80070005

Running Windows 2000, in the last few days Windows Update has found
several critical updates for me. I click Install and it starts but then
tells me "Updates were unable to be successfully installed". One of
those is Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack
1 (KB916281). In View Update History, that item has error code
0x80070005.

I'm running Zone Alarm and Spysweeper but I've done this for years
without any problems.

I downloaded the .EXE for the IE6 KB916281 update from Microsoft and
tried to manually install and received an Access Denied error. I'm sure
that's what's going on but what can I do about it? Thanks much.

You *must* disable SpySweeper for this update to install correctly.
Specifically, the IE Shields.

how is hearing other people with a problem a solution to the problem? i am
have the same problem, where are the solutions so that I can fix it?

Use RegMon. It's probably a permissions problem with some key.
The log probably won't give you enough clues about what one it is,
even if you try using the /verbose option for a manual install from the
command-line.

BTW the KB now sanctions this diagnostic technique.
Search for RegMon in recent articles.

Ignore the title. Just use the article for its technique.
E.g. Method 3. Step 2. You may have to modify the filter
being suggested.
