Update works for Windows, not for Office

Hello,

Updates (whether automatic or manual) work fine for my Windows XP
installation, but Update seems to forget that I have an Offfice installation
as well and does not download (or even show) updates for it. There is no
error message or anything like that.

What could be the reason for this behaviour and what can I do about it?

Thanks,
Michael

What version of office?

"Microsoft Update supports Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) or
later, and Windows Server 2003. It provides updates for Microsoft Office 2007, Microsoft
Office XP, Microsoft Office 2003, Microsoft SQL Server, and Microsoft Exchange Server. "

Thanks,
Michael

Assuming Windows Update is your default update source, go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Click on the GO button to the right of
the "New! Get Microsoft Update today" banner | Follow all prompts | From
now on, Microsoft Update will offer you updates for Windows, Office, and
some Windows Live applications (if installed).

Or you can leave Windows Update as your default and update Office 2007
manually via Office Update website:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/do...s/default.aspx (click on Office
Update link at top-right).

Hello Robear,

When I go to the web page you indicate (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com),
I am automatically forwarded to
http://www.update.microsoft.com/micr....aspx?ln=en-us,
which seems to be the 'normal' update page, and there is no 'GO' button or
"New! Get Microsoft Update today" banner there.

Thanks,
Michael

That's the correct page.

Can you manually scan for Office updates?
http://office.microsoft.com/en-au/do...px?ofcresset=1

Is there anything in the Windows Update log to indicate that it is at least searching for
Office updates and/or errors?

How to view the Update log in Windows:-

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Hello TaurArian,

When I go to the page you indicate and click the "Check for Microsoft
Updates" button, I get forwarded to the same update page again, with the same
results (it does not recognise Office, even though it does recognise
Windows). When I looked in my Update log, there were a number of entries with
warnings that looked like this:

WARNING: Failed to evaluate Installable rule, updateId =
{BC5CAC7D-A8E3-4C69-BD2A-D490EC1ACCA1}.100, hr = 80070663

(but obviously with a different ID in each line).

Any idea what could be causing tihs?

Thanks,
Michael

Options -

1. Repair the Office installation (you can do that from Add/Remove and select "change".
You'll be given the option to repair.
2. Complete remove and reinstall Office 2007.

The error indicates "No valid sequence could be found for the set of patches"

Before you start, make sure you have your Office CD handy and just in case "know your
product key".

When you tried to do the manual scan from Office Updates, did you go via (Office Update)?

Repair doesn't seem to work: when I click 'change', I get a screen asking me
to wait while Setup prepares the necessary files; this disappears after about
three seconds, after which nothing seems to be happening.
When I tried to remove Office, there was a lot of action going on on my HDD,
but after about 10 minutes I got a message saying that Office could not be
removed. Looking in Add/Remove, there is one update (Office SP1) which has an
indication that it cannot be removed. If I try to reinstall Office anyway, I
get an error message as well ('Installation failed' or something similar).

Yes, I went through Office Update.

Please don't tell me that I will have to reinstall my whole system...

Thanks again for your input!

Cheers,
Michael
