I went to the MS update site and downloaded about 10 security updates
i needed. Using WindowsXP sp2. One of them has caused the following
behaviour. On attempting to installa program which uses the install
engine, the error message is: "The InstallShield Engine (iKernel.exe)
could not be launched. Access is deneid".

I have a prior image I could retore to to get me back to where I was
before the updating. However, if at all possible, could someone inform
me which one of the updates listed on the MS update area could be the
cuase and I could just uninstall this partuiclar update? This would
save me time and effort.

thanks.

No personal firewall programs. Just running windows xp firewall.

Also muy search for files and folders app fromm the start menu does
not load, my start / network connections folder is empty, although
internet still works.

I went back via "system restore to before the updates and all is ok
now. But that kind of sucks that the updates interact with something
on my computer to cause this. I'm sure its particular to me.

Yes! That was it. I went to the MS page and couldn't really understand
too much, but at least it pointed me to the correct folder:
C:\windows\registration. So what I did was to look at my other
computer, whch had come out with a perfect bill of health after the
updates were applied, and navegated to this folder and saw that in the
Security tab that apart from Ädministrator" and "System" there was
also the user "everyone" which I lacked in the computer that was
getting messed up. So i added "everyone" as a user in this folder and
copied the exact checks in the advanced,/ edit/ permissions area and
then rebooted. Whatever had been wrong before now works. amazing. A
big thanks to you for your suppprt.
