What did you do to make that conclusion?
Why not try to find out what it has done?
E.g. find any files it has written to.
Looks like something is blocking it from finishing?

Instead of killing that one, perhaps you should bave tried killing
other things which were running which might have been causing a conflict with it?
What *else* was running with it?

If you kill it it doesn't have too much chance to tell you not to do that... ; }

I haven't used Vista. Does it still have msconfig or the option to hold down
a Shift- key to prevent Startup programs from running?
OTOH if the update is running just because it's AU deciding that you still
really don't have that update installed properly yet that would keep happening
as long as you have AU enabled for downloading and installing automatically.
To prevent that try changing your AU settings at least temporarily to prompt
you before installing. E.g. download automatically but don't install before
you tell it to.

My next suggestion, if all that didn't help, was going to be to try using ProcMon's
Boot Logging feature but I don't know if ProcMon has a version which is both
Vista and 64 bit compatible. ; }
Perhaps we should be cross-posting to an OS NG too... <eg>
Good luck
