I go to Windows Update, it scans and then comes back with the message:
"Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page"

Any ideas how I can rectify this. Thanks

Hi

Please try the following:

Click Start >> Run >>
Type the follow command in the Open box.
"net.exe stop wuauserv" (w/o quotes)
Press Ok

Repeat the same for the following commands:

regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe msxml3.dll
net.exe start wuauserv

Restart the machine and try WU site again.

Same problem, Jane; and I have no idea what to do about it. I also had the
problem that I lost my 'Start' Button-Task bar and the only way I could
figure to recover was to go to safe mode, and then Restore which I did; got
my 'Start' Task bar back, but may have some other problems now.; like I have
lost my audio card and probably other unrecognized problems. While I am sure
I appreciate Microsofts XP update in principal, it sure has a lot of
problems, and as usual I do not know if one can or if anyone at Microsoft
accepts any responsibility to respond.

This is a scary giant; I just don't know if there will ever be anything any
better??

Any thoughts yourself?

Hi

Clean out the Download folder (WU5's temporary download folder)
and the DataStore folder located here and see if it helps:

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

You can use the procedure described here:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=11&ln=en

Note that a side effect of deleting the DataStore folder is that you
lose your WU v5 History listing (not critical).

If the above doesn't work:

You might want to try what Wayne Morgan did and see if it helps:

Ok, I got it working. I went to the %windir%\system32 folder and move the
wu*.dll and wu*.exe files to a temporary folder. I coudn't delete them at
this point because some of them were in use. I then went to Windows Update
and it downloaded the WU Install. After a reboot, WU was working and I was
able to delete the files in the temporary folder.
