Updated to SP2, programs would not open

I was working on my son's computer and updated to SP2. I got several messages
about unblocking certain programs so that they would run, and did opt to
unblock them. After restarting several times, I tried opening simple programs
like IE. I would get the hourglass like it was going to open and then
nothing. This was happening to most of his programs, especially those that
are on-line games. I shut the firewall in SP2 down which did nothing. I
finally removed SP2 and everything worked.
Any ideas I how I could actually put SP2 on his computer and still have the
programs work?

Actually, no, since I did not know that it existed until just now!
When I get some time to play with it, I'll try it again.
