updater stuck?

Hi my laptop tells me there is an update that needs to be installed and every
time I try to shut down it tells me it is installing and will shut down when
finished but nothing happens and it doesnt shut down even after hours! An
update icon has appeared on my toolbar but I cant get rid of it or stop it
from trying to install. When I click it the progress bar is empty and doesnt
move. Any help would be appreciated.
