Hi Guys!

My 1st visit to this group, I hope some guru can assist me!
I am running XP SP3 . I am not 100% sure when my problem started
but I think it was after the SP3 update. I have automatic updates set to
'notify and
let me download'. The problem is that windowsupdate *seems* to work fine,
when used manually, it scans for a few secs and then *always* reports that
"no high priority updates are available for my computer"
however belarc advisor tells methat 21 updates are missing. I tried
uninstalling
microsoft update and using windows update - no difference.
Also uninstalled ie7 - no joy. Incidentally my lappy which I updated to
SP3 at about the same time shouts with the little yellow shield most
Tuesdays.
These are the missing updates-

First - stop listening to a third party application when it comes to what
updates your computer needs. Belarc - albeit a fantastic product - is not
perfect and should not be relied upon for anything with 100% certainty.
Especially not a list of updates.

Second - make sure you have the latest version of Belarc - the program, not
just definitions. Uninstall it and reboot. Then go to belarc.com and
download/install the latest version.

Lastly - run through the following to manually repair and update your
computer once - then see if things get better...

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
if you wish.

Reboot.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\net stop wuauserv
--> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\wups2.dll
--> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\net start wuauserv
--> Click OK.

Download the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here (x86):
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
.... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After saving it to the root
of the C:\ drive, do the following:

Close all Internet Explorer windows and other applications.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemDrive%\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /WUFORCE
--> Click OK.

(If asked, select "Run.) --> Click on NEXT --> Select "I agree" and click on
NEXT --> When it finishes installing, click on "Finish"...

Reboot.

Download/Install the latest Windows Installer:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/d...displaylang=en

Reboot.

Log on as an user with administrative rights and open Internet Explorer and
visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select to do a CUSTOM scan...
(Every time you are about to click on something while at these web pages -
first press and hold down the CTRL key while you click on it. You can
release the CTRL key after clicking each time.)

Once the scan is done, select just _ONE_ of the high priority updates
(deselect any others) and install it.

Reboot again.

If it did work - try the web page again - selecting no more than 3-5 at a
time.

The Optional Software updates are generally safe - although I recommend
against the "Windows Search" one. I would completely avoid the Optional
Hardware updates.

Come back - let us know if that worked.
.... Really - come back and let everyone know if that worked.

If it seemed to have failed, do this:

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate any error
code(s) or explanation as to why the page cannot be displayed.

You can copy/paste the last 50 or so lines here...

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:

I can tell my the headers of your post (Microsoft Outlook Express
6.00.2900.5508) that the machine is NOT fully patched and Automatic Updates
is NOT working!

Did you recently have occasion to reinstall WinXP? If so, why and how did
you do it?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed IE7 and/or WinXP SP3?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Not recently, I guess about a year

I use AVG8, Superantispyware and have just installed and run malwarebytes
(all free) as suggested by Shehan Stanley.

Yes Norton was here but the norton removal tool appeared to clear the
remnants
after uninstallation!
I am currently just about to work my way thro the rest of Shenans list!

A note for Shenan, Microsoft customer support couldn't see anything in the
update log a couple of weeks back

Thanks for both's kind attention.
Regards Mike.

So you did install the latest Windows Update agent and the latest Windows
installer?

What about the last part - posting the last 50 lines of the log file after
going to the given web page and doing a custom scan for updates?

I think the big thing now is finding out now is what you actually have.

Start button --> RUN --> type in:
WINVER
--> Click OK.

From the picture at the top - give the exact name of your operating system.

Then go down inside the Window and copy down (post here) the entire line
that starts with the word "Version".

I have a guess at what is going on - but this will confirm it or not.

To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup and if you avoid inline replies.
Thank you.

I've read all of your posts so far.

I've got a sneaking suspicion that "updater" has NOT been working since you
reinstalled WinXP "about a year" ago and that you downloaded/installed SP3
and IE7 manually.

Why did you reinstall WinXP "about a year" ago? Did you do a Repair Install
or did you format & do a clean install?

Is AVG updating automatically?

Open Control Panel | Security Center: What status is reported here for
firewall, anti-virus, and Automatic Update, Mike?

Uninstall whatever SP3 you have (Windows XP SP3 RC2 Refresh I think...)
installed and install the full release...
(Control Panell --> Add or Remove Programs --> Chekc the "Show Updates"
checkbox and find the old SP3 and remove it.)

Full install file:
(Ignore warnings about "just one computer"... This is fine.)

ISO image (make a CD...):

WinXP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation
http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron...tallation.aspx

Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717

Suggestions:

1) Download the full SP3 installation file and/or burn the ISO download to
CD.
2) Ensure (as well as plausible) you have no spyware/malware by doing a full
scan with SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes.
3) CHKDSK
4) Defragment
5) Ensure your hardware drivers are up to date (from the hardware
manufacturer's respective web pages.)
6) Reboot right before you try to install SP3.
7) Disconnect from the internet before installing (physically.)
8) Disable your antivirus and antispyware applications when you are about to
install SP3.

I think - if you follow the above - your problems should disappear soon.
(And don't install betas anymore. heh)
