Aw!!!! You beat me to it. I have a batch file that I was creating and was
going to paste into a post for ya!
With all the problems with BITS and AU, I go thru a series of re-syncing
that always seems to work (On W2K and XP).
1. Clean out the Downloader folder
2. Clean out the C:\Windows\System32\Wbem\Rebository folder
3. Clean out all Temp folders (internet as well as system, user areas)
4. Remove C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder
5. Re-register DLLS
6. Remove C:\Windows\System32\CatRoot2 folder
7. Cleanup C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
I usually do this in Safe Mode, in order to access everything without having
to muck with SERVICES.MSC and/or any AV programs, Firewall settings.
If having problems with Windows Defender Definitions Updates, and the above
does not fix it, then I clean the WD Definitions folder.
