Since 10 Oct I've been unable to download any Automatic Updates. Windows
Defender gives me error message '0x802400022 Wrong diskette in drive. Insert
(gobbledegook) diskette.' But I have no diskette. Win XP is preinstalled OEM.
Full download from Windows update page causes total system crash. If I try
manual download from Windows Updates page, even single items at a time, I get
a fail, 0x80246008 . Checking this in MS tells me to run services msc and
check Event Log. Log is switched on Automatic. However, Background
Intelligent Service is shown as Manual, Status Stopped. If I try to start it
I get 'Windows could not start BIT on local computer, refer to error code
-2147024891. Can't find any reference to this. I've had no updates for more
than a week.

Sadly, although it looked promising, that hasn't helped. Having uninstalled
and reinstalled WDefender, it now tells me I have not updated Definitions for
236 days and it cannot locate the package to download. Basically, the problem
seems to be that Background Intelligent Transfer Service is Stopped. When I
try to start it I get 'Windows could not start the Background Intelligent
Transfer Service on Local Computer. For more information review the System
Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor and
refer to service-specific error code -2147024891'.

I guess this is the reason I can no longer download any Windows Updates. Do
you have any further ideas? I'm running Win XP home. Had no problems until
10th Oct, when Defender told me it couldn't download new Definitions. But
looking at the updates available it seems my Auto Updates hasn't worked for
some time, but simply wasn't telling me.

Thanks for replies. OK, problem finally sorted. After loads of research,
turns out two files got modified on 29th Sept - maybe a virus, don't know.
Anyway, the two crucial files are in C://documents and settings/All
Users/Application Data/Microsoft/Network/Downloader.
Inside that folder are two files:qmgr0.dat and gmgr1.dat. Apparently they
control BITS, which controls Automatic Updates.
Delete these, or the whole folder, and reboot - bingo. Windows recreates the
folder/files. BITS working again, all Automatic Updates now downloadable and
installable without problems. I;m going to post this in the forum, hope it
helps others out. Cheers.

Aw!!!! You beat me to it. I have a batch file that I was creating and was
going to paste into a post for ya!

With all the problems with BITS and AU, I go thru a series of re-syncing
that always seems to work (On W2K and XP).

1. Clean out the Downloader folder
2. Clean out the C:\Windows\System32\Wbem\Rebository folder
3. Clean out all Temp folders (internet as well as system, user areas)
4. Remove C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder
5. Re-register DLLS
6. Remove C:\Windows\System32\CatRoot2 folder
7. Cleanup C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log

I usually do this in Safe Mode, in order to access everything without having
to muck with SERVICES.MSC and/or any AV programs, Firewall settings.

If having problems with Windows Defender Definitions Updates, and the above
does not fix it, then I clean the WD Definitions folder.
