Updates and a "Safe Boot" ... and a WindowsUpdate.log missing

Maurice, MVP, suggested this is the appropriate forum for my current
problem.
The following consists of discussions with him trying to resolve this issue.
Assistance from any source will be appreciated.

Mike

I can't get Updates to XP SP2 and in the process of trying to do so, I'm
instructed to reboot, continuing to press F8, and get into "Safe Mode".
When I do that, I'm not given an option to get into Safe Mode but am given
an option on which of three devices to boot.

How can I get to Safe Mode?

The updates do Not take effect after booting..
The boot with F8 being repeatedly pressed shows the following:

" Please select boot device:

Removable Dev.
Hard Drive
ATAPI CD - ROM"

I don't even know what the last option is! I'd still like to know how to
"Safe Boot" for the future.

The "Updates" I'm trying to get are simply the routine "Start -> All
Programs -> Windows Update".

Clicking on Windows Updates got me to the screen where Microsoft looked to
see what software I was running, then I got the "Welcome to Windows Update"
window with the "Express" button recommended. Clicking on that results in:
"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view.... " Then there are a number of options for help listed.
I've elected "Online Assisted Support" on two occassions and have two
different case numbers. Both times, support (Compass Rule) (?) gave me the
"most likely" reason for my problem and a fix for it. Neither time fixed it
and I wrote and told them that and have heard nothing in return.

So, I'm hanging out here asking for more. One part of the 'fixes' in the
second
case number involved a Safe Reboot, thus my original question. I've
forgotten how to phrase the "Format" in DOS so I could create a bootable
soft drive. That might help. But the supposition that XP is on my hard
drive is also correct. It boots just fine ... just not a "Safe Boot".

I don't have a WindowsUpdate.log in C:\Windows and no C:\WINNT directory.
So, where does that put me? Arghhhhh! Should I create an empty file with
that name just to have one?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

mike,

See if this gets you into Safe Mode when you reboot;

1) Start
2) Run
3) msconfig (typed in the "Run" caption box)
4) Boot Ini (tab at the top of the window)
5) Safe Mode (select it from the list of boot options)
6) Network (select it as one of the "Safeboot" options)
7) OK (at the bottom of the screen)
8) Reboot

After performing whatever instructions were given to you by Maurice, follow
the above steps and remove the "Safeboot" option.

OK Sir_George. Your instructions worked well and I got into Safe Boot,
performed the renames (actually deleted the first two files I was to have
renamed "*.old" [see below] before I realized I was off and running on a
wrong tactic), then re-did the boot so it comes up normally.

What I got from the Compass people and performed:
"
The most common cause of this behavior is that the update for the control
itself, which is responsible for the whole Windows Update process, is not
being executed properly. To resolve this issue, please reboot the computer
and check the result.

If, however, the problem still exists, let’s continue with the following
troubleshooting approach:

1. Click on Start->Run. ,

2. Enter the following command:

regsvr32 wuapi.dll

3. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in wuapi.dll succeeded" message,
click OK.

4. Please repeat this step for the following files as well:

regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll

regsvr32 atl.dll

regsvr32 wucltui.dll

regsvr32 wups.dll

regsvr32 jscript.dll

5. Go to the Windows Update Website and check the result there.

If the issue persists, the most common cause of this behavior is that
certain components, which are responsible for Windows Update, are corrupted
or missing from the system.

At this time, let's refer to the following steps to get this issue resolved.

Step 1: Restart the computer in Safe Mode

================================

1. Reboot your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard.

2. When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, select Safe Mode, and
then press Enter.

3. Log onto Windows.

NOTE: In Safe Mode, your system display and desktop will look and perform
differently than in normal mode.

Step 2: Remove the corrupted files

==================

1. Click Start-> Search.

2. Select "All files and folders", and then search for the following files:

wuapi.dll

wuauclt1.exe

wuauclt.exe

wuaucpl.cpl

wuaueng1.dll

wuaueng.dll

wuauserv.dll

wucltui.dll

wupdmgr.exe

wups2.dll

wups.dll

wuweb.dll

Tip: when searching for multiple files in Windows, you may enter the file
name continuously like wucltui.dll; wuapi.dll; wuauclt.exe in the search
field. This will speed up the whole process.

If you find any of the above files, please right click to rename this file
to (such as wuapi.old). Please understand that we may not find all the files
listed above. If so, it is normal, and please continue to search for the
rest of the files.

After finishing the above steps, please restart the computer in Normal Mode
and try to access the Windows Update site again. "

I let the technician know that his suggestions didn't help and haven't heard
from him, since.

What I'm seeing after "Start - > All Programs -> Windows Update":
"

[Error number: 0x800A01AE]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the
page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve
the problem.
For self-help options:

a.. Frequently Asked Questions

b.. Find Solutions

c.. Windows Update Newsgroup
For assisted support options:

a.. Microsoft Online Assisted Support (no-cost for Windows
Update issues)

Read more about steps you can take to resolve this problem
yourself.
"

So, I can't get updates for windows. Assistance will be
appreciated.

Mike
