I have a dell 4600 that had pre-installed windows with service pack 2 and
every time I do the updates my system go wacky I would get the blue screen my
system or it would just stop working and I can’t do a system restore every
time I try it says can not be restored to this date. So I did a system repair
for win XP home and now I keep getting updates are ready to install so I
install and do a “Shutdown” it goes to install 1 of 87 but before it can
finish it shuts down and I go through the same thing every time I boot up and
I still can’t use my system restore.

The issue *may* be hardware related ... either the system is overheating
or the RAM could be going or not seated properly; the CPU may be going;
the HD or NIC may be going.
When was the last time you cleaned out the tower and checked to see if
the fans were unobstructed ?

The issue may be related to the installed antivirus/security suite
software.
Which AV/security suite is installed ?

Do NOT install any driver updates offered via Automatic Updates. Suggest
you visit the manufacturer's web site for any driver updates for hardware.

You state you did a 'system repair'. Perhaps you need to follow the
steps in this article:

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from
Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a
Windows XP installation
