The lesser of all evils is to activate and continue the
updating and re-activate. This is precisely the process
that Microsoft has elected to implement. Why do it any
differently? At the very worst, one might have to call MS
to complete the activation. But this is also part of the
process. Tell the MS rep that activation was requested by
the MS updates that you are doing. If MS balks, then go to a
supervisor. And, BTW, Microsoft is also footing the telephone
bill for the call.
About the MS Installer...at some point in the updating, the
new MS Installer needs to be installed. Nothing to do with
the current un-activated status. Welcome to the world of
continuous Microsoft Windows patching...XP is the current,
long-term beta version of Windows.
