Hello,

I've just installed IE7 on my machine. When XP now automatically updates
itself, it attempts to install the Windows Installer 3.1, which fails with
the message:
"Updates were unable to be successfully installed
The following updates were not installed
Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1".

I've looked in the WindowsUpdate.log:

Suggestions: manually download the latest WI and install it.

Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

If successful, reboot and try WU again.

Thanks TaurArian for the reply.
I just tried it, and I get a popup window, with "KB89380v2 Setup Error" in
the title bar, and with the message
"Access is denied".

When I click on the "OK" button, the following message is displayed
"KB893803v2 installation did not complete.
Select OK to undo the changes that have been made"

Can you help?

Are you logged in as Administrator?

Try installing with your Anti Virus and Anti Spyware software programs turned off.

Yes, I am the administrator on the machine.
I switched off my GriSoft anti-virus. I don't have any separate anti-spyware
software installed.
Still the same, I can't install the new installer.

Thanks again,
Paul

Hi there,

You can try this worked for me:

At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after
each line:

net stop cryptsvc

ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2

net start cryptsvc

exit

NB: Make sure the filenames are *both* entered as *catroot2, not catroot;
ie, don't forget the "2" at the end of catroot.

At the command prompt:

cd \windows\system32

ren msi.dll msi.old

ren msihnd.dll msihnd.old

ren msiexec.exe msiexec.old

exit

Restart the computer.

On the desktop, double-click WindowsInstaller-KB893803-x86.exe.

Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

Restart the computer.
