I installed several Windows updates last week. Since then, high speed USB
devices have not been working correctly. Several seconds after being plugged
in, they behave as if they have been unplugged (all ports deactivated in the
case of a hub, "unsafe removal of device" in the case of a USB drive etc.). A
few seconds later, they act as if plugged back in. This keeps repeating.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling all the USB drivers, including
those for the USB Universal and Enhanced Host Controllers, and the problem
remains. I see on the Windows Update forum several comments about KB908531
causing problems, and wonder if this could be the cause of my problems. I
tried removing it using Add/Remove Programs, but it did not get removed (ie.
it is still in the list). How can I remove this update to see if that caused
the problems I am experiencing? Also any other suggestions of possible
solutions to this problem would be much appreciated.
I am running Windows 2000 Pro. The updates I installed are:
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - May 2006 (KB890830)
Security Update for Windows 2000 (KB913580)
Security Update for Windows 2000 (KB908531)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB912812)
Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components 2.5 Service Pack 3
(KB911562)
Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (KB911567)
