Updates changing desktop settings

Several times when I downloaded and installed microsoft updates (Office 2000
and Windows XP Home), the desktop settings change for one of the profiles on
the computer. I have two accounts (profiles) set up; one for me and one for
my husband. When I start up (example: Word), I get a message that it needs to
be installed, even though it is on the computer and was used before. I end up
restoring the settings to a previous date, thus not taking advantage of the
improved updates. What do I need to do to install theses updates without
changing my saved settings to both accounts?
