hi, windows update keeps foreve downloading in the background, i couldnt
fathom it out, so i tried a manual update and here is what happens:

*select an update, any one will do, none of them work.
*agree to the license etc.
*"preparing to download"
*"downloading x.xxKB /x.xxKB
*gets to 100%
*"verifying download"
*downling x.xxKB / y.yyKB - the file is now magically 50% larger and so it
starts downloading again. this repeats untl there is no more space left on
the disk if you dont stop it.

so, when the file is verified it decided the file should be bigger and
downloads more stuff. a 370kb turned to 60MB the other day!

i ran filemon and noticed that when it tries to open the "blob" file for
whatever update is says ACCESS DENIED NT_AUTHORIT\SYSTEM.

this is a windows XP sp2 computer
drive is NTFS
runs mcafee virus scan 8, disabling it doesnt make any difference, it's been
swept and is confirded clean. it has the latest dat files.
anti-spyware confirms it's clean, as does adware and spybot.

i'm pretty good with these things, but i cant see how i can view the
security for that folder, and the file disappears once i cancel the update.

this is quite possibly since i ran my first sweep with anti-spyware (which
also screwed my windows firewall but i found a KB article for that)

if anyone could perhaps put me in the right direction here, i'd really
appreiate it.

kind regards
Rich

I am experiencing the same problem. The downloading file’s size increases in
increments of 100K, downloads it, then verifies it, then increases it again.
This loop continues and the downloaded file continues to grow. I tried
stopping it by stopping the wuauclt.exe process, but it starts up
automatically again. I then booted in safe mode and renamed the wuauclt.exe
and wuauclt1.exe files in the SYSTEM32\ and SYSTEM32\DLLCACHE directories by
adding a .BAK extension for now. At least now the process does not continue
using up my precious bandwidth anymore, but we still need a solution to the
problem. Any help will be appreciated.

Same here - KB835732 repeats over and over, but each time it tells me it has
been succesfully updated. Now Windows Update (from Explorer) results in a
total lock up. Hadn't even considered the disk space - any help?

not sure you're having quite the same problem OCainte as you get a report to
say it's successful, mine just keeps going and going unless i cancel it (to
which it then tells me they failed)

but Cit's problem looks to be exactly the same.

my computer is well maintained and the first hint of trouble came after i
installed that anti-spyware thing, Cit, do you have that installed too?

i'm going to remove it when i next get a chance and see what happens.

like i said, it looks like the problem is access denied when it opens the
BLOB file in the downloaded update folder. question is, what's blocking
access to that file?

if i solve this i'll report the result here, i'd appreciate it if you guys
would do the same. i have a feeling this problem will never get officially
confirmed, but lets hope eh?

I also suspect Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware to be the problem, as I never
had this problem before installing it. I uninstalled before posting my
original message, but the problem remained. I will also post the solution if
I am lucky enough to stumble across it. I certainly hope that the answer to
our problem will not be the same as the one that usually solves all problems:
"Reinstall Windows"!

I am having the same issue with Update continuously running (on numerous XP
Pro SP 2 machines) - but I don't believe MS AntiSpyware to be the problem as
some of the machines have never had it installed. The only solution i have
found thus far is to stop the Auto Update Service and set it to manual so it
doesn't start again automatically.

I believe this is definitely a Windows issue that needs to be addressed
FAST! The workaround I have been using has been to manually update each
"fix". This is very time-consuming to accomplish on 5 different machines.

This update from McAfee for VirusScan should resolve the issue:

https://knowledgemap.nai.com/phpclie...lID=KB_kb39752

Hope this helps.

well, i had set virus scan to only scan when reading and not writing, to
increase peformance. so it looks like this could be the problem!

i dismissed mcafee as i'd disabled (but not uninstalled) the on access scan.

i'll try this patch this evening and see what happens. in the mean time,
someone on the MSAS newsgroup suggested this:

From a command prompt:
net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc

i'll post here tomorrow and let you all know the end result.

thanks!

I have this same problem; I don't use MacFee Anti virus.. I use Norton anti
virus; and, when I visit the proposed site below, it fails to find the
document, so I can't get the discussion value either. Auto Update has
stopped working because of this fix. Support packs 1 , 2 are not offered as
a result of this one seeming to not be installed, when in fact, if I look at
ADD/REMOVE programs, the bloddy thing shows up 30 times. Has anyone found
the real solution to this pice of *&^(*^(*^^ ?
