I have just reinstalled windows XP professional and downlaoded spyware doctor
anti-virus. I now need to update windows. I turned on the update feature
and went to the update site. I checked for updates and got the following
messages:
The following updates could not be installed - Microsoft Windows Installer
3.1
The following updates could not be installed - Windows Genuine Advantage
Validation Tool (KB892130)
Has anybody any ideas as to waht I need to do to get my system up-to-date
please.
Many thanks.

Hello Sal,

Perhaps some maintenance.

My computer, select your drive, right click Properties, Disk-Cleanup, run

delete Temp files?
http://www.asystematics.com/c3-deltemps.htm

Run this WGA diagnose test, connection to MS, that scripts working and a new
Validation tool and more.
<http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/>

After that, reboot, and try to D/L

If no luck.
Sal--please go here:

Give my new tool a shot and let me know if that helps.

Windows Update Universal Fix Tool (shotgun tool)

OK, it's not Universal (90% I would say) and it not new because we have
been using it internally for a while, but I just recently modified it so
that it could be posted publically (had to have it automatically download
some support files that were not redistributable).

Are you now running WinXP, WinXP SP1 or WinXP SP2?

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.
