Updates crashed my pc! Please HELP!

I downloaded and installed the recent updates on or about the 15th. After the
install my pc would not boot back up. I have tried everything! It won't start
in safemode, safemode with command prompt, nor will it even boot up with last
known good configuration. However I am able to disable automatic restart on
system failure and am able to read the error message on the blue screen:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this STOP error
screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these
steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives
or hard drive controllers, check your hard drive to make sure it is properly
configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption
and then restart your computer.

I had purchaced my Gateway GT5418E back in Feb pre-loaded with Windows Vista
Home premium and have even tried to correct the problem with the Gateway
Operating System Disc with no luck! Start-up repair says it cannot fix the
problem but when viewing the details it says: bad driver. I am not sure which
update caused this, but I always keep up with the updates so I am guessing it
had to be caused by this last set which I installed on the 15th. I did not
created a restore point before I installed the updates, but from viewing
other posts it would not have mattered if I did because it didn't seem to
even work for the other people who have the same problem. Does anyone have
any other suggestions? Does anyone know if Microsoft is working to fix this?
I don't want to have to do a re-install with the risk of losing the hundreds
of pics of family and friends I have. All other stuff I won't have a problem
getting back on my pc.

I had the same problem, it was an ATIpcie driver. From the vista disc or the
dell disk try to find an option to do system restore and restore to the point
when the update was installed. This is the only thing that fixed it for me. I
did it with the vista disk im not sure how Dell works.

If all else fails see if when you boot in safemode if it tries to load a
driver named "atipcie" before it crashes. If so then this could be the
problem and you can try to delete it. Someone may have better advice

I did notice a ATIpcie driver. But cannot get into my system at all to remove

Hello all!

Yes, I am here once again. Upon further research into Windows Vista I found
that if I had to re-install Vista, it saves all files and folders in a
Windows.old file. So doing a re-install was not so bad. It did save all my
hundreds of pics of family and friends! My pc is back up and running! And I
could not be happier! So to those of you who were just as discouraged as I
was. Trust me...do a re-install.

Scarlet, just a suggestion. ALWAYS have a back up of your important files.
The best type is offline where you know your precious files will be
recoverable even if your house burns down. Might I suggest Carbonite.com .
For about fifty bucks a year you can have Carbonite keep backing up all your
data files, including pictures, every time your machine is connected to the
internet. You can download the application from the Carbonite site. It works
in the background and uses very little of your machine's resources. It is
well worth it to know that in the event of a terrible failure of your
machine, at least your important data files will be able to be recovered once
you get a new machine or a repaired machine back up and working again.

I am having the same problem as Scarlet. If someone from Microsoft is
reading these, you may want to disable that update before this story ends up
in a Mac advertisment.

"Windows Vista is now crashing itself" You could have the PC guy from the
commercial hit himself on the head with a hammer.

Right now Vista has been trying to fix itself for two hours, cycling through
various screens, but mostly just having the little green bars move across the
bottom of the start-up screen.

If anyone has an option that doesn't inlcude reinstalling Vista, please let
me know.

If Microsoft is reading this, you have my email address, feel free to send
me an apology for ruining my weekend.

Vista is killing me,

You will probably need to reinstall Windows Vista if you have done
everything you possibly can. If you happened to create a back up...use it.

Scarlett,

Sounds like you had your Vista disks. I only have my HP recovery disks I
created when I bought the computer. The HP manual says that if I use those
disks, I will delete all the data on my computer.

Just wanted to confirm you used the actual Vista disks to get started again
and not your computer's recovery disks.

Vista is killing me,

No hun, I did not have the Vista disc. Just the Gateway operating system
disc. Mine also said it would delete all my old data. When I used that disc
it re-installed Vista and also put a folder on my pc named Windows.old. That
is where I found files that I thought for sure would be deleted such as pics
and music. I am not saying that it will work for your computer. But I did
take the chance and it paid off for me in the long run.
