I have automatic updates set to: notify me but don't automatically download
or install them

Two days ago I was notified that updates were available, I select download
now. Usually, while the updates are downloading, the download icon remains
in the system tray until the updates are done downloading. This time the
download icon just disappeared and I don't think the updates ever
downloaded.

I turned auto updates off, then turn it back on again and the whole thing
happened again, with updates not downloading.

I finally did the updates manually by going to the update website with IE.

Now the same exact thing is happening to my neighbor. How can I help him to
get the updates to be installed without going to the update website?

Thanks.....Paul

Same thing here. Also when I do a manual, the window sits there with a "."
for a long time then I come back and they all failed. I deleted in the
download programs the WU and WGA plugin and the epmty windowsupdate folder
in program files. they must have been moved. I think WU is falling apart in
general, especially that WGA and legal computers. too many waits and clicks
to do something simple. You do not need to scan the pc for all the updates
then tell it it needs WGA, then 5-6 clicks to get valided. It should be
quick to check before the express/custom, then person clicks download, it
downloads, clicks the install button from IE, it checks, then user clicks
ok. The currenty way there are at least 3 more OK's or something like that
in there.

See "How I got Windows to install the Windows update!!! Success " thread up
there. Worked without reboot.

Absent any errors from your Windowsupdate.log, I'll suggest that, like many
around the world, you're seeing extreme delays caused by excessive demand on
the servers. We saw similar behavior in August when six (6) patches were
released and now there are nine (9), two or 3 of them for all OSS, Win98
through Win2K03.

Be patient: If Automatic Updates doesn't bring 'em in by, say, 17 Oct-05
(Monday), post back.

Or you can try downloading/installing 'em via Windows/Microsoft Update page
(and for best results, try it during off-peak hours, e.g., 11:00 PM-7:00AM
PDT). Understand that by doing so, you're pushing all the Automatic Updates
users further back in the queue (which would explain, at least in part, why
you've not gotten them yet).

I can understand that the update servers are very busy and it could take
sometime before the updates are downloaded.

But what I do not understand is why does the update icon in the system tray
disappear after I click on download now. In the past the icon would remain
there until the all the updates were completely downloaded, and if you
hovered your mouse pointer over top of this icon, it would display what
percent of the download has completed. Is this broke or has the way the
download icon works changed. If is working as designed, it's not a good
design , as the user should have some indication as to whether or not update
downloads are in progress.

btw, where is the windowsupdate.log kept?

I can only interpret the behavior, Paul, I didn't write the application and
can't explain why it appears to be working differently.

Check Windowsupdate.log (%windir%\Windowsupdate.log, typically
C:\Windows\Windowsupdate.log) for errors associated with the
download/install.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=902093

Compare errors to those listed here:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive...date_codes.htm and/or go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > click on Help and Support link in left
pane > Solve problems on your own.
