Updates don't get installed

On my Window 2000 Professional platform, I had used Windwos Update without
problems for quite a while. I now migrated to Windows Update and I think I
got the installation okay, including the WGA tool.
Looking for (optional) updates, the search does produce a list of potential
updates, and after selection, the update get's downloaded - everything seems
fine. At the end, a list is produced saying "the following Updates have not
been installed", including the selected update, but without any further
explanation. What is going wrong? Do I first need to go through a
registration process for my (preinstalled) W2K?

Hello Mario,
Need for you to dig into the log file and see what it contains for the last session.
Use Notepad or Wordpad and take a look at (usually C:\WINNT for Win2000 )
%windir%\WindowsUpdate.log

Scan down to the bottom. Review contents. Copy and paste back in reply "significant portions" for last session.
Be sure to get all the lines that contain "Error".

Let's see what the log file contains.

Hello Maurice, thanks for offering support to a simple "PC user". I had not
been aware about that log file (need to learn out ot it), but here are a few

Hello Mario,

Is your Win2000 on Service pack 4 ? Please run a WINVER to verify.

If you do not have it, then that should be your next major goal. Service pack 4 was released about June 26, 2003.

Do you remember what item(s) were downloaded ?

For the time being, do some cleanups.
Delete your temp internet cache files. Close your Internet Explorer browser & Run Disk Cleanup.

2) Some more cleanups for the Windows Update temp folder.

From main Windows Start menu, select RUN, type in
CMD <Enter-key>

type in
net stop wuauserv <Enter-key>

Go to Windows Explorer.
Look at this folder
C:\WINNT\SoftwareDistribution\Download

If you find files in there, delete them. That folder is where files are stored from W U downloads.

Go back to Command prompt window.
type in
net start wuauserv <Enter-key>

EXIT <Enter-key>


3) Temporarily close/disable your Antivirus before visiting Windows Update website.
You should try to logoff & restart the system before re-trying Windows Update.

Hello Maurice

Thanks again for your guidance and patience - but problem is still there:
1. My Win 2000 is Version 5 (Build 2195: Service Pack 4)
2. failed updates were both with "Security Update (MSXML 4.0)" and "Root
Certificate Updates". Based on the log warning "Failed to evaluate log rule",
I digged into support info for the first item and checked whether this
updates applies to my system - my conclusion: yes - MSXML2.DLL through
MSXML4.DLL are found on my system
3. Clean up on temp Internet cache file folder and WUTemp Folder done.
4. W.U. download files removed, all dated from before upgrading from Windows
Update to Microsoft Update.
5. System rebooted, AV disabled and retried with "Security Update (MSXML
4.0)", but log file to my understanding seems th show the same warnings and
error codes "failed to evaluate ...."

Windows Updates before changing to current level of Windows Installer worked
fine, but now, I seem to be in deep .... problems. A have attached again the
most recent log. Thanks for patience

This is a thanks to unknown Maurice. Having been on my platform since some
two years, I had a few other SW problems parallel to the thread raised here.
I therefore decided to reload the factory platform (which was W2K SP3) and
had no problems now to load Windows Installer 3.1 and a bunch of Windows
Updates. Thanks again for support
