Updates Don't Install Correctly

I just went through the process of installing 11 windows updates,
which were downloaded automatically and installed upon shut down.
After quite some time installing, upon restart, the updates were being
configured. After about 5 minutes, I got the following error message:

"Some changes cannot be completed. Reverting changes. Will retry on
startup. Do not turn off your computer."

I have gone through this process three times now and it results in
exactly the same problem. Can anybody help?

Thanks,
Randy

Please see this page http://dts-l.net/goodpost.htm then post back to this
thread with the information we'd need to be able to assist you properly.

So, I spent about 2 hours installing my updates one by one from
Windows Update to isolate the one(s) that are causing this problem. I
found that the update that creates it is KB938371. I tried
downloading and installing it manually from outside of Windows Update,
but that yields the same problem.

I'm stuck. I've searched around the web and can't find any further
suggestions. Any advice?

[To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. (I assume you were replying to
my post.) Thank you.]

Now we know you're running Vista: Has Vista SP1 been installed yet? (Just a
question, NOT a suggestion or recommendation!)

Any error messages?

============================

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (i.e., KB938371).

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

I do not believe that SP1 has been installed yet. I looked at the
list of installed updates and I see nothing that references SP1. I
believe that the knowledge base article for SP1 is KB936330. This has
definitely NOT been installed.

Also, no error messages that I can see.

Assuming that Windows Update was attempting to install Vista SP1 or
SP1-Prerequisite updates:

1. Download/install the patch referenced here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937287/

Direct Download link for the patch:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...e-9a1634d0cc8e

2. If no joy, see:

The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message, and the
computer restarts when you try to install an update in Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358

3. When all else fails, open a free support incident:

Unlimited installation and compatibility support for Vista SP1 is available
at no charge through 18 Mar-09

[Don't know what bottom posting is]

Thank you for your advice. However, the patch that you reference was
installed on my computer on 2/15/08. When I run it now it says "The
update does not apply to your system.".

I am unable to implement the instructions on your second method. I
have no restore point to go back to. I tried editing the registy.
However, I don't have a Windows disc since it came pre-loaded on my
machine. When I try to edit the registry directly, the keys that it
directs me to do not exist, at least in the location that the
instructions suggest.

So, am I screwed? In your initial reply, you directed me to a site
that told me how to post correctly. On this site, it suggested
avoiding phrases like "Bill Gates is the devil." However, since 24
hours ago my computer was working just fine and now I am looking at a
rebuild, I'm thinking that this phrase just might be appropriate.

[Bottom-posting is posting your reply at the bottom. I top-posted my first
reply, you bottom-posted your second reply, so I edited the quoted section
in my last reply and bottom-posted. Now you've top-posted. <sigh> I'm not
going to edit anything in this reply.]

Start either a free Windows Update support incident or a free Vista SP1
Installation support incident. (I'd go with the latter, myself.) See the
links in my previous replies.
