Updates don't install

When I check for the Windows Updates I receive a list of 96 Updates to be
installed. After they are downloaded none of them are installed. Microsoft
does not indicate any kind of error, but simply warns that the 96 updates
could not be installed!!!
Why? Any hints how to sort this out?
I must say that my OS is XP and that my automatic update is off because I
want to avoid the installation of the infamous SP3, till Microsoft is able to
solve the troubles it causes.
The troubles Microsoft have been causing (and now in a crescendo) make me
decide that this is the last machine that I use Windows of any of their
software.
Fed up of them!

Hail Sergio

Great stuff that you have highligted the atrocious Microsoft support lines.
My experience in trying to download the XP service pack has been a nightmare
without any flicker of support. No.0x080242006 seems to be the main culprit.

As for Vista it should be scrapped at an instant. For months I have been
getting a flash message which reads" there is a problem that has caused the
programme to stop working" Microsoft will investigate for a solution. But
there is never a come back of any kind.

In short, it is a stroke provoking experience and a soul destroying chapter
in my experience.

Never ever microsoft again.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP
installation or you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Ignore the title, if necessary; also applies to Upgrade installs, and
Recovery installs.

SP3 will be the same SP3 next year as it is now. Almost without questions -
any issues you end up having with Windows XP SP3 will be caused by something
specific to your computer - not Windows XP SP3 and waiting until "...
Microsoft is able to solve the troubles it causes ..." is futile and
unwise - as the free support for its installation is only good through April
2009. Take advantage of the offer, clean up, prepare and use the free
support if need be. I'll post more about this after 'fixing' your updates
issues.

Just because it needs to be posted hundreds upon hundreds of times,
obviously...

First thing to try:
As many will tell you - ignore the title and symptoms listed in the article
referred to. Do method 1 and 2 and see if it fixes your issue whether or
not you repaired anything.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
Try method 1 and try to update*.
If fails - try method 2 and try to update*.

*try to update:
- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
- If it asks you to install anything before you see a selection of "Custom"
or "Express" - do so.
- Once you see the "Custom" or "Express" selection, choose "Custom".
- Scan for updates.
- When it lists what it finds - install the critical ones.
- You are generally safe doing the Optional Software Updates. I suggest
avoiding the Optional Hardware Updates completely.

Second thing to try:
http://www.codeplex.com/aureset

Third thing to try:
Get Dial-a-Fix:
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix:
- Windows Installer
- Windows Update
- All the Registration Center options.

Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"
Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".

Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot will be needed.

- Download/Install Windows Update v3.
http://download.windowsupdate.com/wi...gent30-x86.exe
(You *may* need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce"
right after the reboot - immediately after logging in.)

- Reboot.
- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for/install updates.

Usually - method one from the first suggestion fixes the issue.
Sometimes they have to proceed to method two from the first suggestion.

Less seldom - but it does happen - only the tool from the second suggestion
will work - although the first suggestion is contained within the second in
many ways (as well as some of the third.)

And the third suggestion is there because before there was a suggestion (1)
and a suggestion (2) - the third was the best bet and worked in most cases.

Windows XP SP3 help:
( Don't think you should have to do any of the below, read anything,
research and learn? Don't. It's your computer, its your stuff. Know that
sooner or later there will be updates you will not be able to install
because you do not have SP3 - otherwise - there are still people actively
running Windows 98 out there and those who did not update even to SP1 with
Windows XP. It's all a choice - because if you use common sense and you can
do what *you* need to do on what you have - you don't need anything else.)

If you decide to install SP3 (wisest course of action) - look through these
links...

Release Notes for Windows XP Service Pack 3
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...1/relnotes.htm

Key things to note:

Internet Explorer:
"If you have installed Windows Internet Explorer® 7 or a beta version of
Internet Explorer 8, and then install Windows XP SP3, you cannot uninstall
Internet Explorer. To avoid this, ensure Internet Explorer 7 or a beta
version of Internet Explorer 8 is not installed before installing Windows XP
SP3. If you have already encountered this issue, uninstall Windows XP SP3,
uninstall Internet Explorer, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002:
"If you install Windows XP SP3 on a computer running Windows XP Media Center
Edition 2002 with SP1, Windows XP Media Center Edition may malfunction. To
avoid this, install Windows XP SP2 before you install Windows XP SP3. If
this issue has already occurred, uninstall Windows XP SP3, install Windows
XP SP2, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

It seems some people are unable to get further updates after installing
SP3... Seems some have experienced a symptom similar to doing a repair
installation on Windows XP - and the same fix seems to work for them for
that...

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

Some people experience an "endless reboot" issue...

From PA Bear [MS MVP]:
Workarounds:

http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jesp...ng-xp-sp3.aspx
[NB: The above has been updated many times and now includes "a small tool
that will detect the IntelPPM problem and mitigate it before installing
[WinXP SP3]."

1. Boot into Safe Mode and rename INTELPMM.SYS to INTELPMM.OLD.
2. After booting into Safe Mode:
Start --> Run --> (copy/paste)
sc config intelppm start= disabled
--> OK --> Reboot into normal (Windows) mode.

XP Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3 on a non-Intel-processor-based computer

Some people have gotten an "Access Denied" message when trying to install
SP3... Method 3 of this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377

Beyond that - some simple maintenance might be needed - like installing the
latest hardware drivers from your hardware vendors...

I did method 1 and need to go on to method 2 now. How do I know which
Update Agent to choose - x86-based, x64-based, or Itanium-based???

If you are asking - you have a 32bit version of Windows XP - which means
x86.

You would know if you were running 64bit anything at this point. ;-)

Don't (deep) link to outdated packages!
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946928 gives (currently) the definitive
source.

All I did was take the link from the definitive source...

The link I gave:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/wi...gent30-x86.exe

Is the same link Microsoft gives in the first solution I suggest trying:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
(Method 2)

So - I figure if they still link to it - I'm not doing anything harmful by
linking to it as well. (Yes - Microsoft has been made aware of this.)

However - I thank you for pointing it out and might start using the 32bit
link:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237

Or perhaps the one you gave to the article in its entirety... Although I
have found most people then come back and ask "which one?". ;-)
