updates I don't need

I did not install Microsoft Publisher or Microsoft Works Suite (and I don't
plan to), but Automatic Update keeps wanting to update them. I don't want to
clog up my computer's disk space with stuff I don't want. How can I stop
Automatic Update from asking me to accept those related updates?

I use Win XP Home SP2

Suggest you go to the Office Update page and allow it to determine if
there are some files/bits on the system that need to be updated, Nini.
Just because neither product is installed does not mean that files
related to them are not present.

Using IE, go here:

An ActiveX component will be installed in order to be able to scan the
system and then a Genuine check for Office will be performed.
I've found that to be the most accurate way to determine just what is
present in the OS that I did not think was present in regards to offered
Office updates. If that makes any sense <w>

1. Go to Microsoft Update webpage and change your default update source back
to Windows Update:

Go to Microsoft Update > Click on Change Settings in left pane > Scroll to
bottom of page > To Stop Using Microsoft Update > Disable Microsoft Update
software and let me use Windows Update only (check).

With Windows Update as your default, you will need to check in at Office
Update to keep your Office applications fully patched:

2. Change your Automatic Updates configuration to Notify Only (you must
select and approve what updates are downloaded as well as when they're

First, turn OFF auto-update and set it to "notify me but do not
download or install". Then, for those updates, patches, whatever
that you do not want for any reason, simply uncheck them and when
the next screen shows up, check the "do not remind me again" box
and Windows should stop bugging you.

update. Since we need not install this update, I suggest we just hide it. It
is the most efficient method to resolve the current issue and the computer
can still work fine. For your convenience, I have attached the steps to hide
the Update:

Hide specific update:
=======================
1. Open IE and go to Windows Update site directly:
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu....aspx?ln=en-us

2. Click "Custom Install" to scan your system (Not Express Install).
3. After it finishes, choose the update which you want to hide on the right
pane and check the box "Don't show this update again".
4. Restart the computer and this update should not be offered again.

If you would like to restore the update, we can try the following steps:

Restore hidden updates
===================
1. Open IE and go to Windows Update site directly:
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu....aspx?ln=en-us

2. Click "Custom Install" to scan your system (Not Express Install).
3. After it finishes, please click "Restore hidden updates" in the left pane.
4. Choose the update you would like to restore by checking the box and then
click "Save Changes".
5. When running "Custom Install" next time, the update will be reoffered by
