It seems there are a lot of people who are having problems with updates
downloading but not installing. I now have this problem on two different
computers in my house on one, the list is quite long now:

Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB974771)
Security Update for Microsoft Office 2003 (KB972580)
Update for Microsoft Office 2003 (KB978551)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Word 2003 (KB973443)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Excel 2003 (KB973475)
Security Update for Microsoft Office 2003 (KB974554)
Security Update for Microsoft Office 2003 (KB975051)
Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB976882)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 (KB973705)

all failed to update.

I tried scanning manually and the new updates that were required downloaded
and installed fine. I think it is either a problem with the Automatic
Updates program or is a virus or perhaps is a compatibility issue with
McAffee? Anyone else out there having this problem runing McAffee suite of
products?

Thanks

See the "How to obtain help" section of, e.g.,
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972580

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY
and/or 1-866-234-6020 in the United States and in Canada or by contacting
your local Microsoft subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that
are associated with security updates. When you call, clearly state that
your problem is related to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number
(e.g., KB972580).

Or you can...

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

Consumer Security Support home page
https://consumersecuritysupport.microsoft.com/

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

IOW: No Office Update at all installs on your machine, true?
Make sure, the "Office Source Engine" is not deactivated in the Service
configuration (Start -> Run/Searchbox -> services.msc [Enter/OK]).
See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903774/en-us for your reference.

What exactly is meant by "scanning manually"? Which Windows version are
you using?

or Windows 7. I had the same problem when I had to get the new Webroot
Spyware engine and I seem to be having the same or similar problem. I cannot
download Internet Explorer 8 or IE7 or the new windows7. I had same problem
when I had to download the new Webroot spyware engine and McAfee. I turn off
everything on all the programs I can think of, disable any security on
Internet explorer and still cant. Last time I was told to download Google
Chrome and I did and got the new engine but now cant get anything to download
again, even from Google Chrome. I have cleared my history and cookies and IE
pages etc. No luck. Would like an answer if you ever get one.

Try downloading and installing the updates separately in order to get more
information about the error that is causing the failure. In my case the
installation failed because it was looking for an invalid drive. Re-instating
the drive cured the fault. Same could probably achieved by modifying the
relevant registry key.

Cheers
