Hi:

Trying to help a friend fix his laptop - final issue is that Windows
Update will not work properly.

OS is XP Home SP1

The updates will download (and have downloaded) but they will not
install. Get a message that the installation failed.

What should I check? Thanks,

Ken

Again I have a similar problem...

I also have a similar problem. I have tried everything.

So far from what I have seen from forums and news groups, this problem
mostly occures with the following in place:

A Dell Machine
Windows XP Home
Norton AntiVirus 200?
Just removed malware/spyware using Adaware/MS Antispyware or
HiJackThis

I can only assume that the reason for this is people have insecure
machines at first and attempt to fix them using tools, however the
malware already running has affected options and makes the windows
updates fail.

In my case this system did have over 300 different types of malware,
but
I have removed these using MS Antispyware and Norton Antivirus 2004. I
even got SP2 installed from a CD.

But I still keep getting:
"The following updates failed to be installed successfully:
816093: Security Update Microsoft Virtual Machine (Microsoft VM)
Microsoft GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374)"

I also located some errors within the WindowsUpdate Log file, the
first occurance of an error is "GetUserTokenFromSessionId failed with
hr 0x800704dd"

(I can provide a full log and a hijackthis log if required)

This error seems to be related to BITS or something to do with the
SID, and the way the users are setup, but I don't know in what way or
how to go about fixing it.

Please note that a work around is not acceptable, I need automatic
downloads to be working, I cannot simply download the updates for this
user all the time.

Any suggestions?

I am having the exact same issue on my laptop, it is driving me absolutely
mad. If there is any kind of solution that would be very helpful.

This is the summary:
Basically I had an issue where I removed over 300 peices of malware.
So I installed Nav, MS antispyware, winxpsp2 from a cd (RTM) and
hijackthis.
This removed them. However after this I couldn't do the windows
updates.

It seems to be a problem with the following as true:
A Dell system
Windows XP Home Edition
NAV Installed
Previous issues with spyware/malware
Installation of SP2 from a CD (xpsp2_RTM_ENU.exe)

Basically this is my solution:
So I can only assume that this problem is caused by a setting or
similar.

My approach to this was to remove NAV, Remove MS Antispyware, Remove
Hijackthis, Remove SP2, and then do a repair install.

This seemed to do the trick, all the updates installed including SP2.

Once I had installed SP2, I restored all the previously uninstalled
software.

NOTE: Just one thing to notice when your doing this, be aware that you
are vulnerable, so get yourself behind a hardware firewall, don't click
any popups and don't download anything stupid. Make sure you have
removed ALL spyware/malware BEFORE removing any other software using
Antivirus software (NAV and HOUSECALL), Anti-spyware software (MS
AntiSpyware), and check your processes and dodgy registry entrys
(HijackThis).

I had a similar problem with Win2K and I discovered that Spy Sweeper was
causing the installs to abort. You might try disabling the spyware and see if
it helps.
