My friend has a problem with Windows Update. He has WinXP Home. He just go
over problems with some trojans and viruses which were recently cleaned up,
but I'm not sure this has to do with that. Windows Updates in the past have
worked.

What happens is that the download of the updates works fine - progress bar
tracks the download as it comes over till the download is complete. Then it
says that it is completing the installation and be patient but NOTHING
happens. The lower progress bar never even starts up. Eventually you have to
close the download/install dialog. The Browser itself is usually hung at
this point.

I've reinstalled the IE Browser (ver 6 sp1) and that made no difference. It
seems to make no difference which updates we're updating - the results are
the same. Here's the Windows Update log showing the lines that pertain to
the last try we made (we never get any explicit error alerts or logs - just
gets 'stuck'):

Open the iuhist.xml file located in Program Files\Windows Update\V4
folder.( You may have to enable " Show hidden files and folders "
from Folder Options, View in the Control Panel ). The latest entries
are at the top of the page. Look for an entry such as this :

<installStatus value="FAILED" needsReboot="0"
errorCode="-1073741819" />

It will be at the end of the first entry. NOTE: this is an example
and may not be the exact error code in his .xml file.

Please post back with the error code or the entire entry for the
failed installation.

Thanks, MowGreen. I've emailed my friend and he will get back to me within a
day. I'll post what he found then.
