Updates downloaded but fail to install

WinXP SP2

It all started with a failed connection to a previously USB drive (not sure
if that is even relevant--USB works for a USB-powered drive but the USB
connection to a printer & AC-powered USB drive failed on all USB ports).

As my first attempt to resolve this problem, I thought I would run Windows
Updates. They all downloaded fine, but only the Windows Installer 3.1
installed. Now, even after rebooting, none of the rest (92 others) will
install.

When I click Start -> Windows Updates, it opens two browsers: one on the MS
update page, and one with no address. Not sure if that's relevant, either.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:

Method1 (register wups2.dll) did the trick.

Thanks,
