Have you tried renaming SoftwareDistribution folder?

To do so :
Start > run > type in "cmd" (no quotes) and Enter
type in "net stop wuauserv" (no quotes) and Enter
type in "ren c:\windows\softwaredistribution sdold" (no quotes) and Enter
type in "net start wuauserv" (no quotes) and Enter
type "exit" and enter

Try a restart and check updates ... hope it helps.

When I do this I get the message, "access denied" everytime I shut the computer down it states, "do not shut down the computer installing updates 1 of 1 the computer will shut down on it's own.

That seems to have done the trick. Thanks.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop, running Windows XP Professional SP2, that I
inherited from a former work colleague.

Whenever I go to shut down -- even when the yellow update icon wasn't
present in the notification area -- I am prompted to "install updates and
shut down", and Windows goes through the usual "Installing update 1 of 1"
process before switching off.

This happens every time I shut down, often a few times a day, and even when
I have not been alerted about any new update. Could one of them have got
stuck somehow? How can I find out which update it is, when the icon isn't
present?
