In the hopes that this will help others - on July 12, the Update site
installed the 'latest software' , but after that any updates that I selected
failed to install.
It turned out that evidently the Resident in Spybot S&D had prevented the
Active X installation in the updated software.
However, Windows Update 'thought' that the software was installed, so
that even after I disabled Spybot and tried to reinstall the software,
Update wouldn't reinstall it. I couldn't figure out how to uninstall the
updated software, so I ended up using System Restore to go back to before
visiting the Update site on July 12. I then disabled Spybot S&D, Spybot
Resident, ( also disabled Adaware SE and Panda Internet Security and enabled
all Active X in Internet Explorer just to be on the safe side). I then went
to Windows Update, which installed the 'latest software' and then proceded to
install the updates I selected without a hitch.
