Updates fail to install-error code 0x80070002

The most recent 8 updates for XP Pro have failed to install. There have been
no new applications installed or uninstalled since the last successful
updates about 1 month ago. Have checked posts and tried deleting the
Downloads folder and running the BITS batch program that re-registers the
following DLLs:
regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

Have tried turning of the SP2 firewall, NAV Corp. 8.0, ClamWin AntiVirus,
Lavasoft Ad-Watch and all other TSR's to no avail.

Delete the DataStore folder and see if that helps:

Thank you for the feedback; it was very complete and easy to follow.
Unfortunately, it didn't solve the problem. I also tried removing everything
in the Startup Tab of MSconfig and disabled all the Services I knew I didn't
need. Same result. Update will report "Downloading & Installing KB..." and
then almost immediately reflect "failed". Only the last of the eight updates
takes more than a second to fail and that one takes about 4 seconds (on a T-1
line). Any other suggestions?

What is your objective? If you just want to get these updates installed
then I suggest you download and install them manually.

E.g. use the AU prompt for download to generate a list and then
download them from the Windows Update Catalog.

are sufficient details in the log to tell you exactly what is wrong.
E.g. 0x80070002 says: ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND
but we don't know what "file" it is. In fact, we have seen this code
used in other circumstances than what the code implies too.

There is a verbose option for logging but my experience
is that it does not capture the information we want. YMMV.

Thank you, Robert. This was a VERY thorough answer. Success! I tried two
new things in addition to stopping the automatic update service and
completely clearing the Software Distribution, Cache and all Temp folders
tried earlier. 1) I uninstalled a program called BricoPack that gave XP a
Vista GUI (I noticed that the uninstall replaced a substantial number of
DLLs) 2) I took your suggestion and manually installed the updates one at
time, skipping the first cumulative update to IE. This required restarts
after most of the installs. Last I went back & installed the IE update and
it also was successful. As of now, all updates are installed and all TSR's
are back to normal, except for BricoPack.

I have been having this exact same problem but I am not as computer saavy as
you two are. Could you walk me through how you fixed this issue cause my
updates are not working at all.

Mark, you have my sympathies - it is frustrating. It is great that you have
tried reading previous posts rather than just post a brand new one.

1st thing you should know: ultimately, my poroblem was the result of a
non-Microsoft desktop GUI that emulated the GUI in Vista. Once I uninstalled
that program, my updates worked and have continued to work.

However, assuming that your problem has a different cause, let me stat with
a couple of suggestions:

1. Go to your Start / Run and type MSCONFIG. This brings up a diaglog box
from which it is easy to modify various settings.
2. Select the Diagnostic settings and restart the computer.
3. Now try going to MSUpdate.

If that doesn't work, the next thing I suggest is:
1. Again, go to Start/Run and type CMD to get to a Command Prompt.
2. At the command prompt, type SFC /SCANNOW
3. This will prompt you for your XP CD. Then it will scan all of the
required OS files and make sure they are all there and of the correct version
level.
4. Then try MSUpdate again.
