Updates Fail to install

After spending 4 hours removing the win32/parite virus from the property
manager's PC, I ran Windows Update and all security updates failed to
install. On checking the update history I find that all security updates for
the last 2 months also failed.

The PC is now clean, so does anyone know if some residue from the infection
is the cause of these failures? Or any other ideas?

How did you ascertain that the system was infected with Win32/parite,
how and what did you remove it with, and how have you determined that
the system is now "clean" ?

Suggest you use Internet Explorer and have the system scanned by the
OneCare Protection scanner:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

Or, read this - http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/parite.shtml

You receive an error message when you try to start a program that has an
..exe file name extension

Both AV & malware scans identified lots of .exe files infected with
win32/parite (I can read).

Removal steps; Disable system restore, restart in safe mode, McAfee full
scan, Malwarebytes full scan, regedit to delete 'pinf' key, restart, full av
& mware scans (twice).

That's how I know the PC is now clean.

Now, any ideas why sec. updts fail?

Do .exe and .msi files run now ? If yes, then download the Fixit on this
page and save it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Configure the system to Clean boot:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

Once it's been Clean booted, run MicrosoftFixit50202.msi and choose the
Aggressive mode. The system *must* be connected to the internet when the
Aggressive mode is chosen so ensure that the native XP firewall is On.
The required updating components will be downloaded and installed.
Restart the system once the Fixit has finished it's operation.

UNdo the Clean boot steps, restart once more.

Can the system update now ?

If not, then please post the *last* 50 or so lines of the
WindowsUpdate.log - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

How do I reset Windows Update components?
[run the Fix It in Default and Aggressive modes]
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

If no joy, you've probably got (much) more work to do! (A "nothing found"
scan result from MBAM and/or your McAfee app does not necessarily mean the
computer's 100% clean or secure.)

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

Microsoft PCSafety provides home users (only) with no-charge support in
dealing with malware infections such as viruses, spyware (including unwanted
software), and adware.
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...prid=7552&st=1

Also available via the Consumer Security Support home page:
https://consumersecuritysupport.microsoft.com/

Otherwise...

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2a. WinXP => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!)
in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

2b. Vista or Win7=> Run this scan instead:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm

3. Now run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting requested logs
in an appropriate forum, not here. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!!

Checking for/Help with Hijackware:
.. http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/tshoot.html
.. http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/Malware_Defence.htm
.. http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware

**Chances are you will need to seek expert assistance in
http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachi...php?board=10.0,
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/viewforum.php?f=5,
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cleanup,
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30 or other appropriate forums.**

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.
