Updates fail to install w/o error message or history log

I've been unable to install critical updates. The updates fail but do not
show up in the update history, so I am unable to obtain details such as an
error message.

Updates:
..NET security update (KB917283)
XP SP3
Broadcom Modem update

Recent History:
1) Uninstalled .NET 1.1
2) Installed Visual Studio with .NET 2.0
3) At end of install looked for updates but ran into Windows Genuine
Verification (WGV). First WGV failed to install, then I was able to install
using direct download link. Then Win Update failed to recognize that I had
successfully installed and run WGV, so it kep trying to install it anyway.
After several downloads & restarts I was able to successfully get past WGV.
4) Am now stuck where I am - can't install updates.

OS:
XP Pro SP2

Other:
Run Norton Internet Security - DISABLED to best of my knowledge
Run Webroot Spysweeper - DISABLED to best of my knowledge
Run Webroot Window Washer - DISABLED to best of my knowledge

Must note that I believe all these security programs are completely disabled
now, but may not have been at the start of my troubles.

Not quite sure what you're referring to, but there is no SP3.

Get the Broadcom Modem update from the manufacturer.

Appreciate the reply. My SP3 was a typo of SP2. Thanks for the download link.
It appears to have installed successfully.
