i am puzzled. please help. i have several machines that i can not install
updates on from the windows update site and the updates are not installing
from SUS. one of which is a freshly formatted machine. i installed SP2 for
windows XP first and now it doesn't install updates from windows update. i
have a few more machines like that also. they all have SP2 for windows XP.
one of them had an error The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service
terminated with service-specific error 2147500053 (0x80004015). but i don't
know if the rest had that same error. they all worked in the past. any
suggestions?

I have the same problem. It worked fine on my laptop before I installed SP2.
Since then, the update stopped functioning.

People told me that I should use a purchased version of sp2, saying that a
free sp2
is using up your "update quota". Now I have to find out what updates I need
on the update site and then go to school's update mirror and manually
download these updates. I even don't know if it's legal... but I think I
should receive this service.

The security descriptor on the BITS service was changed by a security
template such that NetworkService account doesn’t have READ access to BITS
service.

You are confused. If you have XP installed then the upgrade to SP2 is
free. SP2 can be download in full from the MS site, or there is a fee
CD one can order from MS or get it for free at various office supply
retail oulets. There is no purchased version. If you wre to buy a
retail copy of XP it should come now as SP2 but either way updates are
free. Have no idea what this person menant by "a free sp2" and "update
quota" but there is no such thing as a quota for getting updates from
MS. Downloading updates on another computer, putting them on CD and
installing on your system is perefectly legitimate. How else would
someone without internet access get updates?

One other thing, though. If your copy of XP is not legitimate in the
first place, then you very well might not be able to update it through WU.

But what do you do about it ... how do you correct it?

My windows update also does not work since installing SP2 and there are many
other things that don't work. I cannot access the registry anymore and the
windows task manager will not show the processes that are running on my
machine ... I am fed up with these updates that take forever to figure out
the problems and get the system working again.

Hi

Your task manager/regedit problem might be the work of a worm or
something similar (it could be from some spyware or parasite as well).

To try to solve your problem, do the following:

Copy and paste the URL address lines into your IE address bar:

http://www.dougknox.com

In the menu, select Win XP Utilities, Disable/Enable Task Manager.

For the regedit issue:

In the menu at http://www.dougknox.com, select Security,
Disable/Enable Registry Editing Tools.

This small VB Script will remove this restriction. If the
first time the script is run it says "Disabled", run it
again to enable registry edits again.

To try to find what has caused this:

Run a cleanup tool, e.g. Stinger.exe from McAfee, it removes 30+
virus/worms in one sweep.

McAfee AVERT Stinger
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

and this one:

On Line Virus Scan
http://housecall.trendmicro.com

Be sure to run an updated Antivirus program at all times.

For the Spyware and Parasites part, you will need to run other tools:

The Parasite Fight Quick Fix Protocol
http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites

Hi,
I think i solved my own issue. my problem was that i could not get updates
to install. they would all fail to install. i also noticed that the BITS
service was not starting. it would err on me. i found a post that said to
rebuild the BITS service. So, i went to:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;838079

and downloaded and installed the latest support tools, then from a command
line, i ran BITSADMIN /UTIL /REPAIRSERVICE /FORCE

and that rebuilt my BITS service. i then started it and rebooted. then i
went to the windows update site and it worked fine. this might be worth a
try if your having the same issue. it seems to happen on all of the machines
i have on my network after i install SP2
