Updates from the Windows Update Web site are not installed and an "Error 0x80070005:
Access is denied" error message is logged to the Windows Update.log file

This error message may occur if you have insufficient permissions to the Windows
Update registry keys. The WindowsUpdate.log file will also read errors 0x80070005 and
0x80080005.

Hi Taurarian,
Thanks for the reply.
I tried all of the suggestions in the provieded links.
With the reg permissions there is full access for admin accounts and System,
there are other options available, Brett & Debby(User) being the main account
with admin rights and All users.
If I give full permission to either of these options I can no longer connect
to the update site.
As for the fix on the Doug Knox site it made a real mess and I had to restor
to an earlier date.
Something interesting though, I canot find a folder called WUtemp as
mentioned in the first link anyware on my computer and I'm guessing it is
needed.

Windows Update Checklist

With regard to the WUtemp folder - I don't think it is used anymore with SP2.
SP2 uses the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder.

Matti ...
I used a dial up connection for downloading PS2 with not problem. (It took
some 6 hours each time.) If you haven't already, I would suggest you go to
Microsoft Windows Updates and have all the upgrades downloaded that are
lacking including PS2.

Just a quick update.
I have not managed to get Update KB885836 to install no matter what I have
tried, but the latest two updates released by Microsoft downloaded and
installed without any problems.
I might just have to put up with this glitch untill I reformat next time,
unless it happens again, then I will have to bring the format on a bit sooner.

One last desperate attempt for 885836.

If it's downloaded it will be on the HD - under
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
Under this folder you find several folders with numbers and letters as their name.
for example:
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\9c33f79f1 ccc143cdb6301de7496f087\update

Check the branches.inf file and see if it is marked Read only. If you locate the
update on your HD and the branches.inf is Read Only - clear the Read Only.

You got me excited there for a bit but alas the read only box is not checked.
I would like to offer a big thank you for your attention and help trying to
fix this glitch. It's not worring me as much now as it was when it first
happened.
I keep my antivirus, firewall and spyware programs up to date and am fairly
dilligent with security on my computer so I should be alright without this
update.

Did it get far enough to create a log file for it?
Check for error messages in there.

Also use the TechNet Security Bulletin MS04-041 file manifest
to see what versions of those files you currently have.
Use MBSA as an alternative to this manual checking procedure.
