Updates failed, is it because I no longer have an L:\ drive?

The June and July updates for Outlook 2003 Junk mail filter have both failed,
and now the Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB936507) has also failed. I
tried manually downloading the Excel update but that failed to install
because I have registry entries to the L:\ drive which I think I merged with
my F:\ drive after installing Office 2003 Professional, Front Page 2003 and
Expression Web.
I cannot do a repair because of the L:\ drive problem, cannot install the
Outlook updates because I did not activate Front Page before uninstalling it
after the upgrade to Expression, and cannot re-install Front Page because of
the registry entries to L:\.
There are 14 registry keys to the L:\ drive which are in :-
Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\Prod uctID\SourceList
Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\Prod uctID\SourceList\Ne
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Insta ller\Products\ProductID\SourceLis
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Insta ller\Products\ProductID\SourceList\Ne
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Win dows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components\ProductI
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Win dows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products\ProductID\InstallPropertie
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Win dows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{ProductID}
where ProductIDs are alphanumeric strings.
Yes, I did also use a registry cleaner, but this has now been uninstalled,
never to return as it failed to detect the L:\ drive entries as pointing to a
non-existent drive.
I guess that if I try to uninstall Office and Expression Web I will get the
same error messages relating to my non-existent drive so would welcome any
advice on what I should do.
Thanks to anyone who tries to help.
Viv

Go to the Microsoft Update main page and do the Custom Install of updates and
when it shows that those updates are needed, click the + sign to expand the
text on the update and there is a box to check to not show this update any
longer and your Updater will ignore it in the future. I have dozens of
various updates ignored in this manner.

Thanks Lenny, I am happy to do that with the junk e-mail update but would
prefer to install the Excel update so am hoping to find a solution to my
problem.

Hey Viv - I don't really have any great deal of knowledge about this,
but I stumbled on your post while searching for answers as to why the
Office updates (Outlook & Excel) would not successfully install on my
laptop either. Don't know if this applies to your situation, but what
I needed to do was to re-enable the Office Source Engine. Don't have a
clue how it got disabled, seeing as how I was previously unaware that
there was one on my computer. However, it seems to have fixed the
problem and allowed both updates to install successfully on the next
try. Perhaps this was an obvious solution that you've already tried,
but I thought I'd throw it out there =-)

To find the OSE:
Right click My Computer
Manage
Services and Applications
Services
Office Source Engine - Double-click, Enable it, then right click on
the original listing and select "Start"

Then I just ran the installation through the Windows Update, and
everything went fine.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the suggestion, although it does not solve my problem.

Hi Viv,

I also had the same problem as you... Try this

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=884298
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832672

It worked for me real fine and have no problem. Basically you need to edit
your Registry to redirect the download code to the right drive letter...

I think that is the reason why you are unable to download...

Hope this helps

Casey,
Many thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately the registry entries which
these articles suggest should be edited do not exist on my computer. I am
glad it worked for you.
