Updates failed, no error code

I have a new laptop and was installing all the updates. There were about 40
between Windows Vista and Office. They all downloaded and started updating.
During the update process my battery died and the laptop shut down. When I
powered back up it picked up where it left off in the middle of one of the
updates.

Now when I go to Windows Update it says the update failed. when I go to
view history it says they were all successful and I don's see any error
codes. How do I find out which of the 40 failed? Should I uninstall all 40
and start over or will that cause worse problems?

Where are you checking ' view update history ' ?
One can assume that since the system is not being reoffered the updates
that they are installed.
To confirm that they have actually installed, check the
WindowsUpdate.log: How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

Scroll all the way to the bottom of the log and work your way back up to
see which updates installed and if any failed to.

I have the same problem. The updates are being offered, but they fail and
are not in the update log. Any ideas?

Sorry, I'm new to Vista. There is no Run when I go to Start. The
instructions you directed me to were written for an earlier version of
windows. Anyway, how do I find the log file in Vista?

never mind. I found it.
There are no fatal errors. There are several warnings. The warnings have
the following 3 error codes
802001F
0x80240017
0x802400b

At this point I am ready to reset my laptop to the factory image and start
installing a few updates at a time and check for error codes after each
update.
I assume they need to be applied in date order. Correct?

Oh what fun! several more hours of puttering with this! :-(

0x80240017 Operation was not performed because there are no applicable
updates.

The other 2 error codes you posted are incomplete. They contain 8
characters, as 80240017 shows. However, if they are 8024000B and
8024001F, then that indicates an error on the client-side, re: your system.
Either repost the correct errors or, download and *save*:
AU Check (v78)
http://www.codeplex.com/aureset/Rele...eleaseId=17263

Once the download completes close all open programs and browsers.

***Temporarily disable *ALL* installed security software ...
antivirus/anti-malware/spyware/3rd party firewalls, etc.
Consult the User Guides of said security software to learn how to stop
all processes and services of same. *Enable* the native Windows firewall
as the system must be connected to the net in order for the tool to
download and install required software components needed for updating***

Now run au_check_v78_codeplex.exe and allow it some time to complete
it's operation.
Reboot afterwards.

Try to update the system with the sec software still disabled and the
Windows firewall enabled.
Did it ? If yes, then now you know what caused the updating issue.
Configure the installed sec sofware to scan the system according to MS'
recommendations:

Virus scanning recommendations for computers that are running Windows
Server 2003, Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822158

*** Reenable the installed sec software now ***

And the Version of Windows that is installed is _________ ?
Suggest you attempt to update once more. If the system fails to update,
then post the last 50 or so lines of the WU.log, please.
