      11-20-2004
tried services.msc, gpedit.msc, regedit, updates, msconfig, but still
updates are off and cannot be selected on. Service is started.
smart ideas anyone?

Click Start >> Run >>
Type the follow command in the Open box.

regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe MSXML3.dll

then reload the updatepage it should work now

Computer\Properties\windows updates - everything still greyed out.

Your computer may be infected with Trojan.Win32.Boxed. The variant that
infected my computer was Trojan.Win32.Boxed.27718.B. The site
http://www.globalhauri.com/ has details about how to fix it. If you want to
make a quick check of whether or not your computer is infected, click Start,
Run, and type in the following: "services.msc" (don't type the quote marks).
Then scroll down to see if there is a Network Client service listed. If so,
your computer has been infected with the trojan, as Network Client is not a
valid service. Go to the site I mentioned above, and follow their
instructions for repairing your computer.

Thanx, but no Network Client services is listed. Also no virus found by
Hauri....

Any other suggestions, anyone?
