When I select "Windows Update" I get the following message: "Checking for the
latest version of the Windows Update software..."
But, nothing happens. The screen continues to display the same message and
doesn't change. I'm running XP Professional.

Barry,

Open the WindowsUpdate.log found in the WINDOWS directory. Scroll
down towards the bottom for the most recent entries. Look for one
with an error code. Then go to the Troubleshooter:
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...oot.aspx?ln=en
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
and look for the specific error code you encountered and try the
suggested resolution(s). If no joy, post back with the error code or
the segment of the log thta contains it.

I looked at the log. There were no recent errors (last one was in April, and
there were pages of successful downloads after). After that, I tried to
check my "Update" settings in the System Properties dialog box. To my
suprise, I have no Automatic Updates tab to click. Is this a symptom of a
certin type problem?
