Updates if no internet connection

Hi there

I do not have an internet connection, I am writing this from a friend's
computer. I have a Toshiba laptop. I have managed to download SP1 to a pen
drive and was thinking of installing this on my laptop, but now I am worried
because I don't know if this will cause problems (some have been reported
with SP1).

What do you do if you don't have an internet connection? Just never get your
windows updated?

Windows version? Why don't you connect your laptop to the internet using
your friend's connection to get your updates?

You do whatever you feel you need to do. Seriously.

Most of the updates/patches/etc you would get would be to fix some issue you
may not have if you never connect the machine to the Internet. Some may be
to fix specific issues with specific applications/Windows itself - but if
you are not exepriencing those issues - why would you need the fix? (Don't
fix what is not broken.)

You have always been able to download updates individually. I do not see
that changing.

I assume (by mentioning SP1) you have Windows Vista?

If one has no internet connection than one does what you've already done
.... use a family member or friend's system to download the updates.
Place them on portable media and then install them on your system.
One can obtain almost all of the updates from the Microsoft Update

or, the MS Download Center:

SP1 Standalone again (after 8 April)?

You're mowst welcome. IMHO, it's always best to download entire Service
Packs, save them, and then move them to the root drive [ the drive where
Windows is installed to ], completely and totally disable *all*
installed antivirus/security suite/anti-malware software, run Check Disk,
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...41f811033.mspx
then run the native Disk Defragmentation tool or a 3rd party Disk
Defragmenter and then install the SP.

Hi there

Sorry to be painful about this, I read through a lot of the articles you
suggested, but I think I need the dumberer version. I still can't work out if
I need to install the three pre-SP1 updates even if I am using the standalone
version of SP1. And one of those three has now been removed (can't remember
which one). So not sure what to do. Btw, I have Vista Home Premium.

Run this to find out if the system is ready for *any* package of SP1:

Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

If the system checks out, download and save the standalone package.
There are 3 prerequisites updates that are required before instaling the
SP1 package that is available from Windows Update.
Vista Home Premium requires 2:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938371/
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937287/

Both of the above KBs mention this:

So, in your situation, *no* prerequisite updates need be installed since
you plan to use the stand-alone package.
BUT, you really should run http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821 in
order to rectify any inconsistencies in the OS.

IF SP1 is *not* being offered from WU, there might be another reason as
to why:

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not available for installation from
Windows Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948343

This *should* be the one to pay attention to:

Go over " Method for Cause 5 " to see if a driver might be the reason
why SP1 was not offered via WU.

You're mowst welcome. In addition to the points in the MSKB, the roll
out of SP1 is being done gradually. It may not be offered to some
systems depending upon where said system is located and which language
is installed. Currently, English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese
systems are the first ones that will receive notice via automatic updating.

IF installation or post-installations issues arise, MS is offering
no-charge support until March 18, 2009, regardless of whether Vista is
an OEM or RTM [retail] installation:
