Updates install automatically, but 'let me choose...' selected

Automatic updates: I have selected the "Download updates for me but let me
choose when to install them" option, and usually it brings up a box which
gives me the option to install or not.
Recently, it's started downloading but giving me no option - yellow shield
appears then disappears, when I shut down I can shut down+ install or just
shut down - but no way to see what is being installed.
Any ideas why this is, please?
Running XP - SP2. Only new software recently installed is Google
search/Google desktop
Thanks
