Updates installed automatically when they shouldn't be

Twice now in the past couple of months I have had updates installed
automatically even though I have it set to "Download updates but let me
choose whether to install them". When this happens it seems to do some sort
of weird/incomplete reboot, and the sound quits working (Vista says no sound
device is installed) until I reboot the computer again.

Also when this occured yesterday the setting got changed to "Install updates
automatically". We do not have any group policy or anything that would change
this.

Does anyone know what is going on? Are certain critical updates being forced
upon us by Microsoft?

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista x64 SP2) when
posting to this newsgroup.

Install-at-Shutdown Behavior:

Did you encounter this behavior after 14 Apr-09 and then again after 09
Jun-09?

Are you certain that the "Notify Only" option (vs. the "Download but notify"
option) hadn't been selected and you'd already approved some/all updates for
download?

When you went to turn off the computer, was there a "Install updates and
turn off computer/Turn off without installing updates" line directly below
the Standby/Turn Off/Restart buttons?

Examine your WindowsUpdate.log and tell us which updates installed this way.

MS tells us that this only happens under a very few circumstances: Had you
(1) installed One Care or (2) Microsoft Security Essentials beta or (3)
changed your default update source from Windows Update to Microsoft Update
or vice versa?

<QP>
What are the differences between Windows Updates...and Microsoft Updates?

While Windows Update provides you with updates specifically for Windows,
Microsoft Update expands the service to download and install updates for
other Microsoft software, such as Microsoft Office and Windows Live...

Thanks for the info.

I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate (x32) with Service Pack 1 on a Dell
Inspiron 9400 laptop.

After looking at the log I see now that automatic updates woke-up the
machine at 3AM and installed the latest round of updates for this week. I
didn't know it could do this, which is bad since my laptop was stowed in my
backpack at the time. :-( Shouldn't this feature be disabled on laptops by
default?

So automatic updates must have been set to install automatically, though I'm
not sure how that got set that way. The last time this problem occured though
a couple of months ago, I'm sure I checked the automatic updates settings and
it was still set to download only.

In any case when updates completed it attempted to reboot but failed with
error 0x8007045B. Here is the details on that from the log:

[To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you quote all of the
previous message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you.]

Is this computer updating via WSUS (Windows Server Update Services)?

Have you tried logging-on as the Administrator and/or running Windows Update
manually via the Start menu?

Can you please answer all of the questions in my first reply?

<QP>
0x8007045B ERROR SHUTDOWN IN PROGRESS

I'd say the machine is trying to be reboot from a couple of places, or a
former reboot is still pending.

Looks like a good time to just pull the plug.
