We have the same situation as described in a previous post (shown
below).

We have a WSUS server in place , but this was happening with our SUS
server too.

Primarily IBM desktops & laptops with WinXP SP2.

I really don't think it's hardware or OS. The one thing that we see is
that the systems using windows installer 3.0 or earlier (when they used
SUS) had less trouble. So I was theorizing that it could be logon.scr
in relation to the auto-reboot on systems with windows installer 3.1
(as all systems now have since they use WSUS).

We are going to turn off the screen saver and will post the result.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi has anyone come across situation where Windows updates are
automatically
installed and a restart is initiated but the system hangs. If one comes
back
to the system later and you just move the mouse; the reboot continues
sucessfully. I suspect problems with the default screensaver:
logon.scr.
Seems to happen with all our machine which are usually various version
of
the Dell Optiplex range.
Any know fixes for this situation?

Did disabling the screen saver work for you guys? I tried stopping the
SAV services and it seem to work on a couple boxes.

Hi,
I finally got to test this and work thru an update scenario.

I turned off logon.scr via the registry and it seemed to correct this.

I am testing more machines now - we have a scenario this weekend that
might help.

Using regedit , I did :

HKEY_USERS\Default\Control Panel\Desktop

To disable the screen saver:

Change the Value of Scrnsave.exe to(None)
Example: (Scrnsave.exe:REG_SZNone))
Change the value of ScreenSaveActive to Zero
Example: (ScreenSaveActive:REG_SZ:0)

To Change the default screen saver used:

Change the Value to the screen saver file (*.scr).
Example: (Scrnsave.exe:REG_SZ:Logon.scr)
Change the value of ScreenSaveActive to 1
Example: (ScreenSaveActive:REG_SZ:1)

This is from
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q154528/
on MS site.

We cannot disable SAV even for testing , so I have to follow this line,

Thanks,
Mike
